How much do temp machinist jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 25, 2026, the average hourly pay for temp machinist in the United States is $25.63, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $20.91 and $28.61 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Temp Machinist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temp Machinist, you need a solid understanding of machining principles, blueprint reading, and experience with manual or CNC machine operation, often supported by a technical certificate or apprenticeship. Familiarity with tools like calipers, micrometers, and CNC programming software is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and reliability are vital soft skills for handling varied assignments and ensuring quality work. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining precision, safety, and productivity in fast-paced manufacturing environments.

What is the highest paid machinist job?

The highest paid machinist roles are often specialized positions such as CNC programmer or precision machinist, especially those with advanced skills, certifications, and experience working in aerospace, defense, or high-tech manufacturing. These roles can earn significantly higher salaries, sometimes exceeding $70,000 annually, depending on location and expertise.

What are some common challenges faced by Temp Machinists, and how can they adapt quickly to new work environments?

Temp Machinists often face the challenge of adapting to different machines, tools, and workflows at each assignment. Since every workplace may use unique equipment or follow specific safety protocols, rapid learning and flexibility are essential. Building strong communication skills and asking questions early helps temp machinists integrate with permanent staff and operate efficiently. Emphasizing attention to detail and following established procedures can also help ensure quality work and safety, even in unfamiliar settings.

Are machinists still in demand?

Machinists are still in demand due to ongoing manufacturing, aerospace, and industrial needs. Skilled machinists with experience in CNC programming and precision machining are particularly sought after, and employment opportunities are expected to grow steadily in the coming years.

What is the difference between Temp Machinist vs Machinist?

Work EnvironmentConstruction sites, manufacturing plants, or temporary job sitesFactories, workshops, or manufacturing facilities
Employment TypeTemporary, short-term assignmentsFull-time or long-term employment
Industry UsageUsed for short-term projects or seasonal workRegular production and manufacturing roles

The main difference between a Temp Machinist and a Machinist is employment type and work setting. Temp Machinists typically work on short-term or temporary projects, often in construction or seasonal manufacturing, while Machinists are usually employed full-time in manufacturing facilities. Both roles require similar skills and certifications, but their job stability and work environments differ.

Will AI replace CNC machining?

AI technology is increasingly used to assist CNC machinists by optimizing tool paths, reducing errors, and improving efficiency. However, skilled machinists are still essential for complex tasks, setup, and quality control, making full automation unlikely in the near future. The role of a temp machinist involves hands-on operation and troubleshooting that AI cannot fully replace yet.

What are temp machinists?

Temp machinists are skilled workers who are hired on a temporary basis to operate, set up, and maintain machines that produce precision metal parts or instruments. They often fill in for permanent employees during busy periods, special projects, or employee absences. Temp machinists must be proficient in reading blueprints, using measuring tools, and following safety procedures. Their assignments can range from a few days to several months, depending on the employer's needs.

Can you make 100k as a machinist?

A temp machinist's salary typically depends on experience, location, and skill level. While some highly experienced or specialized machinists can earn close to or over $100,000 annually, most entry- and mid-level positions pay less. Achieving a six-figure income often requires advanced skills, certifications, and working in high-demand industries or regions with higher wages.
