Cardiac Catheterization Lab Registered Nurse โ€“ Monitor/Circulator (Cath Lab RN)

The Cardiac Catheterization Lab Registered Nurse โ€“ Monitor/Circulator (Cath Lab RN) is responsible for providing patient care in the monitoring and circulating roles during peripheral (arterial and venous) and coronary diagnostic and interventional procedures, device implants (AICD, PPM, and loop recorders), and electrophysiology (EP) ablations. This role involves pre-procedural, intra-procedural, and post-procedural nursing care, and requires specialized knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy, hemodynamics, and arrhythmia recognition, as well as the ability to function effectively in a fast-paced, high-stress environment. This role may also be assigned to other areas of the department, including pre-op and post-op.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Patient Assessment and Preparation: Conduct pre-procedural assessments, including patient history, labs, and anticoagulation status. Educate patients and their families about the procedure and answer any questions. Prepare patients for procedures, including IV access, monitoring pads, and medications as ordered.
  • Monitoring Responsibilities: Monitor and document vital signs, ECG rhythm, oxygen saturation, and hemodynamic waveforms. Administer and manage moderate sedation, assessing sedation level, airway, and patient response. Recognize and promptly communicate arrhythmias, ECG changes, and procedural complications.
  • Circulating Responsibilities: Prepare the procedure room, including equipment, supplies, medications, and sterile setup. Anticipate and provide sheaths, catheters, wires, stents, closure devices, leads, and ablation catheters. Administer medications, contrast, and anticoagulants as ordered, and perform ACT monitoring. Maintain a sterile field, aseptic technique, and radiation safety practices, and document device implants.
  • Post-Procedure Care: Provide post-procedural monitoring and care, assessing for access site and rhythm complications. Perform sheath removal and achieve hemostasis per policy. Educate patients on post-procedure care and follow-up, and document care in the medical record.
  • Emergency Response: Respond promptly to emergencies, including ACLS, defibrillation, cardioversion, and temporary pacing. Participate in code blue, STEMI activation, and other emergency protocols as required.
  • Collaboration and Departmental Coverage: Work collaboratively with the cath lab team and participate in continuing education and quality improvement initiatives. May be assigned to other areas of the department, including pre-op and post-op, and rotate between monitor, circulator, and pre/post-op assignments based on departmental needs.
Qualifications:
  • Education: Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Nursing (ADN/BSN) from an accredited nursing program.
  • Certification and Licensure: Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of [State]. Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required. Moderate sedation competency and radiation safety training per organizational policy.
  • Experience: Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in a critical care or cardiac care setting. Previous experience in a cardiac catheterization or electrophysiology lab preferred.
  • Skills: Strong clinical skills in cardiovascular nursing, patient assessment, and arrhythmia recognition. Ability to remain calm and effective in high-pressure situations, with excellent communication skills. Proficiency with cath lab equipment, hemodynamic recording systems, and electronic health records (EHR).
Work Environment

This position is a clinical position and will report to the department Monday โ€“ Friday. Procedures are performed between 6:00 AM and 4:00 PM, and daily hours fluctuate based on procedure volume and case length. This position may also be assigned to other areas of the department, including pre-op and post-op.

Physical Requirements

This position requires full range of body motion. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, walk, and stand for prolonged periods; talk or hear, both in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to handle or operate standard office and procedural equipment; reach with hands and arms; wear protective lead apparel; assist with positioning patients; and lift up to 25 pounds.
