Description
Directs and assists school children to use crosswalks in streets and traffic intersections to ensure safe travel to and from school.
Examples of Duties
  • Assists children to cross the street during peak school traffic hours at designated school zone areas.
  • Regulates vehicular traffic at designated crosswalks in such a manner that safety of school age children will be significantly enhanced when using crosswalks.
  • Establishes rapport with children using crosswalks to obtain and garner support of safety efforts.
  • Demonstrates proper signals and appropriately uses issued equipment to assist in traffic control.
  • Stop pedestrian and vehicle flow from entering crosswalk with one arm extended, palm facing outward toward approaching pedestrians or vehicles while simultaneously holding the stop sign above your head with the other arm.
  • Monitors and directs children to ensure that they walk in designated crossing areas.
  • Reports issues or malfunctions of school signals to supervisor.
  • Directs inquiries, complaints, and concerns by the general public to supervisor.
  • Reports conditions that may be unsafe, hazardous, and perilous to supervisor; contacts local authorities directly and timely in case of an emergency.
  • Maintains a professional and effective working relationship with Town staff.
  • Maintains a professional and appropriate demeanor, e.g., positive and friendly attitude, in dealing with the general public, to include children.
  • Uses online application for tracking hours worked.
  • Follows Town, department, and division policies and procedures.
  • Keeps supervisor informed of work activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must have a valid Texas driver's license and driving record must be in compliance with Town policy, or have reliable transportation.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.

EDUCATION:
  • A High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is preferred.

OTHER:
  • Ability to work flexible hours, to include all shifts and sites necessary to accommodate school crossing guard schedule.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
  • Ability to read, see, hear, talk, write, in close proximity to approaching traffic.
  • Ability to stand and walk continuously for up to one hour per shift.
  • Ability to carry and raise an object over-the-head weighing up to five (5) pounds upright, continuously, and repeatedly for 1 to 2 minutes at a time.
  • Ability to bend arms and push and/or pull a child weighing up to 100 pounds.
Must submit to and pass a post-offer, non-regulated drug test and thorough background checks (including criminal history).
Desired Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of safe crossing guard procedures.
  • Ability to communicate well verbally.
  • Ability to perceive and respond appropriately and timely to potential hazardous, uncertain, and emergency situations.
  • Ability to bend from the waist and/or twist.
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions, including exposure to extreme heat, cold, and inclement weather.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective communication with Town employees and the general public, to include children.
  • Ability to travel to and from assigned school crossing locations.
  • Ability to track hours worked via online application.
