Job description

GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs a variety of entry level semi-skilled duties related to the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of city parks, cemetery and public grounds.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under immediate to close supervision of the Parks and Recreation Director, Parks Supervisors on a project-by-project basis for temporary, seasonal and limited work (generally expected for the period from March through November).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Operated light equipment such as lawn sweepers, lawn mowers, pick-ups, tractors and various hand and power tools as needed.

Performs mowing, debris collection, construction and maintenance to city parks, cemetery and public grounds.

Checks and service assigned equipment; performs routine maintenance and emergency repairs; reports mechanical problems for shop repair. Assists as a mechanic helper to seasonal demand for fleet maintenance.

Performs general maintenance functions such as painting, raking asphalt, cleaning storm drainage inlet boxes, cleaning gutters, maintains, cleans and repairs tools and equipment; assists in the cleaning of shop and surrounding site.

Performs a variety of park and ground maintenance and construction work requiring the use of hand and power tools, such as weed-eater, rake, shovels, etc.

May be asked to operate specialized heavy equipment, such as front-end loaders, backhoe and other similar equipment in the construction, maintenance and repair of city parks, cemetery and public grounds in a training capacity.

Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Must be at least 18 years old.
  2. Knowledge, skills and abilities:

Ability to operate hand and some power equipment of various kinds under varying conditions; perform heavy physical labor; develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, and the general public; tolerate weather extremes in the work environment.

3. Work Environment: Tasks require variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching and lifting. Talking, hearing and seeing essential to performing required job functions. Common eye, hand finger dexterity etc. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability and discriminating thinking. Daily local travel required in normal course of job performance.
