Job description

Camp Curiosity Manager (Temporary Full-Time)

Department: Education

Location: Miami, FL

Supervisor: Science Education Manager

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Camp Curiosity Manager is responsible for overseeing daily camp operations for Frost Sciences offsite summer camp program, Camp Curiosity, Powered by Frost Science, hosted at Ron Ehmann Park in South Dade. This role supervises camp staff and ensures the successful delivery of engaging, science-based, hands-on curriculum for children ages 59. Camp session topics may include, but are not limited to, astronomy, geology, engineering, chemistry, marine science, ecology, and biology.

The Camp Curiosity Manager also supports camper well-being by addressing behavioral concerns, responding to incidents or emergencies, completing incident documentation, and maintaining clear and professional communication with families as needed. This position reports directly to the Education Programs Manager and requires a commitment for the duration of the camp program as outlined below.

  • Up to 40 hours per week
  • Availability Monday Friday, 9:00 am 5:30 pm.
  • Availability for all nine weeks of Summer Camp running from June 8- August 7. There will be no camp on June 19 and July 3.
  • Availability to start May 1 for training and camp preparations (if this date is not possible, it is not an automatic disqualification but please note this on your application).

SALARY: $25 per hour, Temporary FT

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise a team of camp instructors and teaching aides, providing guidance and feedback to camp staff while maintaining a positive attitude. Act as a role model to camp instructors, teaching aides and volunteers.
  • Complete scheduling of camp staff and respond to staff calling out as needed.
  • Respond to issues that may arise with campers throughout the day, e.g. misbehavior, incidents or emergencies, filling out incident report forms and parent correspondence.
  • Assist camp instructors and lead activities as needed in the delivery of interactive, science-based camp classes. Classes may be indoors or outdoors.
  • Work with children aged 5-9 years old in a hands-on environment.
  • Support with the general supervision of the camp, including classroom and behavior management.
  • Facilitate the pre-planning and prep work regarding camp.
  • Ensure supplies are ordered, properly organized, and on-hand for program delivery including hands-on elements and associated hand-outs or worksheets.
  • Coordinate a comprehensive schedule of day-to-day activities for the duration of the nine weeks of summer camp.
  • Demonstrate leadership to ensure safety of campers and maintain positive conduct among campers
  • Prepare and organize supplies prior to the start of each week of camp.
  • Support in maintaining the classroom and other museum spaces used during camp, always ensuring a safe and clean environment. This includes set up for activities/experiments, keeping tables and chairs organized, and clean-up of supplies and materials at the end of each activity and the end of the day.
  • Supervise during morning drop-offs, lunch, and afternoon pick-ups.
  • Dresses appropriately in the Frost Science uniform, including a provided Frost Science polo, solid-colored pants or long shorts (no jeans), and comfortable, slip-resistant closed-toe shoes.
  • The Camp Curiosity Manager must attend orientation and training to review class curricula, safety policies and museum guidelines before camp commences.
  • Ensure camp participants are supervised at all times during the program.
  • Maintain daily contact with the Science Education Manager or other Manager on Duty.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
  • Adhere to the established policies and procedures of Frost Science.

MINIMUM JOB/EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelors degree in Education, Science Education, Museum Education or a related science discipline.
  • An interest in science and the desire to work with children in a camp setting
  • At least 2 years of education experience in a classroom or similar camp environment working with elementary or middle school students.
  • Experience working with children with special needs a plus
  • Teaching certification a plus
  • CPR and First Aid Certified by the first day of camp (Frost Science will provide training if needed).

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to manage staff, including schedule management, and training.
  • Comfort with working in a fast-paced environment with creativity, curiosity, integrity, and determination.
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities and sound judgment
  • Punctual, enthusiastic, mature, and flexible
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, including giving and receiving feedback on the quality of service
  • Must follow museums established policies and safety regulations
  • Good knowledge of educational methods and/or a comfort with a variety of science topics together with the ability to have fun and participate in interactive and engaging activities in the class
  • Must exhibit an energetic attitude while engaging with campers and enjoy working with children
  • Proficiency in another language is a plus, but not required

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:

  • Work generally involves moving around, frequent use of stairs with potential for light lifting.
  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors.
  • This position requires working with tools and chemicals using appropriate personal protective equipment.
