Temp attorneys, also known as temporary or contract attorneys, are legal professionals hired for a limited period to assist with specific projects or to manage increased workloads. They often work on tasks such as document review, legal research, or supporting litigation teams during peak times. Temp attorneys may be employed directly by law firms, corporations, or through staffing agencies, and their assignments can range from a few days to several months. This role offers flexibility for attorneys and allows employers to efficiently manage fluctuating legal demands.

What are some common challenges temp attorneys face when joining new legal teams on short notice?

Temp Attorneys often encounter the challenge of quickly acclimating to new workplace cultures and workflows. They must rapidly understand ongoing cases, familiarize themselves with firm protocols, and build rapport with permanent staff, all while meeting tight deadlines. Success in this role requires adaptability, excellent communication, and strong organizational skills. Many temp roles offer a dynamic environment with opportunities to gain diverse legal experience and expand professional networks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temp attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temp Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor degree, active bar membership, and strong legal research and writing skills. Familiarity with document review platforms (like Relativity or Concordance), e-discovery tools, and case management systems is typically required. Excellent attention to detail, adaptability, and effective communication are vital soft skills for success in temporary legal assignments. These skills and qualifications ensure high-quality legal work, efficient project completion, and the ability to seamlessly integrate with new teams and processes.

Domestic & Family Law Senior Associate
 Simms Showers LLP

We’re hiring a senior family law attorney who wants to practice at a high level and integrate their faith meaningfully into their work.

Who We Are
The vision of Simms Showers LLP is to integrate our faith into the practice of law with excellence, to help people and glorify God. We are a mission-driven firm in the fullest sense. Our shared faith shapes how we treat one another, how we approach our work, and how we understand what it means to serve clients with excellence.

The culture is both intellectually rigorous and genuinely warm. We collaborate closely, invest in one another, and enjoy working together.

The Role
This is a full-scope domestic role with meaningful responsibility and day-to-day autonomy. You will serve as lead counsel on your matters, managing cases from the initial client consultation through resolution (whether by negotiated settlement or trial) and through appeal when appropriate.

Your work will include:
•       Case strategy and client counseling
•       Drafting and filing pleadings
•       Managing discovery
•       Motions practice and brief writing
•       Negotiation and mediation
•       Temporary (pendente lite) and final hearings
•       Regular court appearances in Virginia state courts

You will be supported at every stage by a seasoned, accessible team that is genuinely invested in your success, but this role is not designed for someone who needs step-by-step oversight.

Compensation & Benefits
We offer a clear path for growth, with compensation that rewards performance over time.
•       $150,000 – $250,000+ compensation package, tailored to your experience, qualifications, practice, and any existing book of business. Our collections and productivity incentive program provides exceptional upside for high-performing attorneys
•       Clear advancement tracks with partnership opportunity
•       Significant retirement benefits including a 401(k) with 4% firm match, cash balance contributions and profit-sharing contributions
•       Multiple health insurance options with the firm paying 75% of individual premiums for all plans and 60% for qualified dependents
Qualifications
We are seeking a lawyer who wants their professional life to reflect their faith and has been looking for a firm where that is possible.
•       A minimum of 3 years of domestic and family law experience, 5+ years preferred
•       Active Virginia Bar Admission
•       Strong ability to work independently and manage a caseload
•       Willingness to travel to courts across Northern Virginia
•       Demonstrated litigation experience in divorce, custody and child support
•       Experience supervising work of junior associates and/or paralegals
