Job description

Position Summary

Help young athletes discover what they're capable of. As the After School Track & Field Instructor (Temporary), you'll introduce elementary and middle school students to the excitement of track and field while helping them build confidence, develop athletic skills, and experience the power of teamwork, perseverance, and personal achievement. Through engaging practices, skill development, conditioning, and positive coaching, you'll create an environment where every participant is encouraged to challenge themselves, celebrate progress, and enjoy being active. Whether a student is trying track and field for the first time or developing existing skills, you'll help create an experience that inspires a lifelong love of movement and healthy living. This is a temporary, seasonal, grant-funded position supporting a school-year track and field initiative from August 1 through October 31.

How You'll Make an Impact

  • Lead engaging track and field practices that teach fundamental skills, sportsmanship, teamwork, and healthy competition.
  • Create a safe, inclusive, and encouraging environment where every participant feels supported and motivated to achieve their personal best.
  • Plan age appropriate activities that build endurance, coordination, confidence, and a lifelong appreciation for physical activity.
  • Organize practices, skill challenges, meets, and other activities that celebrate individual growth and team success.
  • Build positive relationships with students, families, school staff, and YMCA Team Members while ensuring a safe and high quality program experience.

Schedule

This is a temporary, seasonal position expected to run August 1 through October 31 during the school year. Instructors typically work 2 to 4 days per week, averaging 6 to 10 hours per week, with shifts scheduled on school days between approximately 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Paid training and professional development are provided throughout the season.

Who We're Looking For

This role is ideal for someone who believes sports can change lives. Whether you're a coach, former athlete, physical education instructor, collegiate athlete, or track and field enthusiast, you'll thrive in this role if you're passionate about helping young people build confidence, develop new skills, and discover the joy of movement through positive coaching and encouragement.
