What does a television development executive do?

A Television Development Executive is responsible for identifying, developing, and nurturing new television show ideas from concept to production. They work closely with writers, producers, and creators to evaluate scripts, provide creative feedback, and shape projects to align with the network's or studio's vision. Their role includes overseeing the pitching process, managing budgets, and ensuring that promising projects move successfully from development to greenlight. Ultimately, they play a key part in deciding which shows make it onto television.

How does a television development executive typically collaborate with writers and producers during the development process?

A Television Development Executive works closely with writers and producers to guide projects from initial concept to greenlight. This collaboration involves providing creative feedback on scripts, helping to shape story arcs, and ensuring the project aligns with the network or studio’s strategic goals. Executives also coordinate between various departments—such as casting, legal, and marketing—to address logistical and creative concerns early in the process. Effective communication and a strong understanding of current industry trends are key to successfully shepherding a project through development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a television development executive, and why are they important?

Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as Final Draft, script coverage software, and pitch presentation platforms is essential, along with a solid understanding of market trends. Excellent networking, negotiation, and leadership abilities help build relationships with writers, producers, and broadcasters. These skills are crucial for identifying promising content, guiding projects from concept to greenlight, and ensuring competitive programming in a dynamic industry.

Account Executive

KDVR FOX31 | KWGN Colorado's Very Own Channel 2 | Nexstar Digital
Denver, Colorado

Position Summary

KDVR FOX31, KWGN Colorado's Very Own Channel 2, and Nexstar Digital are seeking an experienced, high-performing Senior Account Executive & Project Leadto join our Denver sales organization.

This is a senior-level revenue position designed for a proven sales professional who can manage and grow key accounts while consistently developing new business across the full marketing funnel. The successful candidate will be equally comfortable selling linear television, streaming/CTV, digital marketing, sports, sponsorships, and integrated multiplatform solutions.

This role goes beyond traditional account management. We are looking for a proactive business developer who understands how the media landscape is evolving and can translate advertiser challenges into sophisticated, results-oriented solutions.

In addition to individual revenue responsibilities, the Account Executive will partner with sales leadership on select strategic initiatives, including the development and execution of community programs, tentpole opportunities, sponsorship platforms, and revenue initiatives that can extend across the Denver market, Front Range, and statewide Colorado footprint.

This is an opportunity for an experienced seller who wants to own business, create business, and help build what comes next.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Consistently achieve and exceed monthly, quarterly, and annual revenue goals across linear television, digital, streaming, sports, and sponsorship platforms.
  • Manage, retain, and strategically grow an assigned portfolio of key accounts through strong client relationships, thoughtful account planning, and measurable business outcomes.
  • Maintain a strong emphasis on new business development, consistently identifying, prospecting, developing, presenting, and closing new advertisers.
  • Develop full-funnel marketing strategies that combine the appropriate mix of broadcast, streaming/CTV/OTT, online video, display, search, social, audience targeting, sponsorships, and other digital solutions.
  • Serve as a consultative marketing partner by identifying client business challenges, developing customized solutions, presenting strategic recommendations, and communicating campaign results.
  • Build strong, credible relationships with local direct advertisers, advertising agencies, decision-makers, and community business leaders.
  • Develop and maintain an active sales pipeline with both short- and long-term opportunities and demonstrate consistent prospecting and business-development activity.
  • Maximize revenue opportunities surrounding sports, tentpole programming, premium content, streaming sports, and integrated sponsorship platforms.
  • Proactively develop year-round sports and sponsorship strategies rather than relying solely on transactional or event-specific opportunities.
  • Identify opportunities to grow local campaigns into larger Front Range, statewide, regional, or national programs utilizing Nexstar's extensive portfolio of media assets and markets.
  • Prepare and deliver compelling, customized, insight-driven sales presentations and proposals.
  • Educate clients on the changing media landscape and demonstrate how linear television and digital platforms work together to reach audiences throughout the customer journey.
  • Collaborate with sales leadership, digital teams, research, marketing, creative services, sales support, and other departments to develop and execute integrated client solutions.
  • Utilize research, audience insights, attribution, campaign performance data, and other available resources to improve recommendations and demonstrate advertiser ROI.
  • Maintain accurate account information, opportunity pipelines, activity, and forecasts within company CRM and sales systems.
  • Work effectively with sales support personnel to ensure accurate order entry, campaign implementation, billing, reporting, and overall client service.

In addition to individual sales responsibilities, this position assist with select strategic initiatives as assigned by sales leadership.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Partner with sales leadership to develop, package, launch, and execute key station and market revenue initiatives.
  • Help lead the sales rollout of community initiatives, special programming, major events, and integrated sponsorship opportunities.
  • Identify and develop new sponsorship concepts capable of generating incremental revenue across the Denver market and broader Colorado footprint.
  • Develop opportunities that can be expanded across the Front Range, statewide, regionally, or throughout the Nexstar organization.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders to establish pricing, inventory, digital components, sponsorship assets, sales materials, timelines, and go-to-market strategies.
  • Help translate major station initiatives into clear, sellable solutions for the broader sales organization.
  • Serve as a resource to Account Executives by sharing category expertise, sales strategies, successful approaches, and best practices related to assigned projects.
  • Track progress against project revenue objectives and provide regular updates to sales leadership.
  • Help identify opportunities to improve, expand, and scale successful programs.

What Success Looks Like

The successful Account Executive will:

  • Consistently deliver revenue growth.
  • Protect and expand key account relationships.
  • Build a meaningful pipeline of new business.
  • Prospect consistently rather than relying primarily on an established account list.
  • Sell confidently acrosslinear and digital platforms.
  • Make streaming a core component of their book of business.
  • Consistently monetize sports, tentpole events, and sponsorship opportunities.
  • Think beyond individual products and sell integrated business solutions.
  • Identify opportunities others may overlook.
  • Take ownership of projects and move them from concept to revenue-generating execution.
  • Collaborate effectively across departments and with sales leadership.
  • Demonstrate resilience, accountability, curiosity, urgency, and a strong work ethic.

Qualifications

  • Strong business acumen and ability to understand client objectives, identify opportunities, and translate those needs into effective advertising strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish long-range objectives and execute strategies to achieve them.
  • Exceptional relationship-building, prospecting, negotiation, presentation, and closing skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly organized with the ability to simultaneously manage key accounts, new-business activity, deadlines, and strategic projects.
  • Self-directed and comfortable taking ownership of projects with limited supervision.
  • Collaborative mindset and demonstrated ability to work successfully across multiple departments.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CRM platforms, and digital sales tools.
  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Advertising, Communications, Business, or a related field preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
  • Valid driver's license, acceptable driving record, and access to reliable transportation.
