The Telephony team is looking for a hands-on Software Engineering Manager to lead engineers building core calling and messaging technologies across Apple products. This team is responsible for cellular and Wi-Fi call flows, carrier features, IMS-based services, emergency calling, diagnostics, analytics, and modem integration. You will work closely with software, baseband, QA, carrier engineering, and product teams to deliver reliable, private, and high-quality communication experiences to millions of customers.
Description
As a Software Engineering Manager in the Telephony group, you’ll lead a team developing critical technologies for cellular communication and calling features. The work includes IMS subsystems (VoLTE, VoNR, Wi-Fi), RCS, emergency calling, telephony audio quality, diagnostics, and analytics.
You’ll set technical direction, guide architecture and design, and drive execution from early development through product shipment. This role also includes ownership of telephony audio quality and lab-based validation in San Diego, as well as opportunities to build automation systems that improve regression detection and software quality.
You should be comfortable working across complex system boundaries, debugging challenging issues, and driving improvements in quality, reliability, and engineering efficiency.","responsibilities":"Lead, mentor, and grow a team of engineers working on telephony technologies

Own telephony CS audio development and quality, including lab-based validation and testing

Build and expand analytics for telephony features to improve reliability and user experience
Drive design, implementation, and delivery of cellular call flows and carrier services
Partner with baseband, iOS/watchOS software teams, QA, carrier engineering
Provide technical leadership in C/C++ and systems-level development
Own quality, performance, reliability, and release readiness
Lead debugging and resolution of complex issues across modem, network and software layers
Define and potentially lead development of automation systems (e.g., continuous integration workflows) to detect regressions and improve code health
Establish strong engineering practices for design, testing, and delivery
Recruit, develop, and retain engineering talent
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with telephony systems, including IMS, VoLTE, VoNR, RCS, or emergency calling
Experience with telephony audio systems, codecs, and tuning
Experience designing automation or CI systems for regression detection and quality improvement
Deep expertise in C/C++ including concurrency and performance optimization
Familiarity with cellular protocols like SIP, SDP, MSRP, and MLS
Minimum Qualifications
8+ years of experience in systems, embedded, or platform development
3+ years of engineering management or technical leadership experience
You have strong programming experience in C and/or C++
You have experience delivering production-quality systems across complex environments
Strong fundamentals in architecture, debugging, and performance analysis
You have experience working cross-functionally with other teams
You have excellent communication and leadership skills
You’re laser-focused on the smallest details that are meaningful to our customers
You're obsessively passionate and inquisitive, and seek to tackle everyday problems in innovative ways
Experience using modern developer tools, including AI-assisted workflows
Pay & Benefits
At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $195,700 and $338,400, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple's discretionary employee stock programs. Apple employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards, and can purchase Apple stock at a discount if voluntarily participating in Apple's Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
