General Summary:


The Engineer- Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) is responsible for the design, documentation, and oversight of structured cabling systems, telecommunications infrastructure, and related low-voltage systems. The RCDD ensures that designs meet industry standards, building codes, and client requirements, supporting projects from concept through completion. This role partners with engineering, project management, and field installation teams to deliver high-quality, compliant, and scalable communications infrastructure solutions.


Supervision Level:


Reports to Director, Network Communications.

Responsibilities:


Designs, develops, and reviews structured cabling system layouts, including backbone and horizontal distribution systems for voice, data, video, and other communication networks.

Ensures all designs comply with BICSI standards, building codes, and client specifications.

Produces detailed design documentation, including drawings, schematics, and specifications.

Supports bid packages, proposals, and design-build documentation.

Collaborates with project managers, engineers, and field teams to ensure constructability and alignment with project goals.

Provides design oversight during construction, including submittal reviews, RFIs, and field inspections.

Identifies design risks and develops mitigation strategies.

Maintains up-to-date knowledge of emerging technologies and industry best practices in communications distribution systems.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


Experience:


A combination of experience, education, and/or training which demonstrates the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:


A minimum of 5 years of experience in telecommunications or structured cabling design.

Experience designing low-voltage systems, including voice/data, fiber optic, wireless, and audiovisual infrastructure.

Familiarity with CAD software (AutoCAD, Revit) and industry-standard design documentation.

Experience working with multiple stakeholders, vendors, and client representatives.

Strong understanding of construction practices and project coordination.

Knowledge of:


BICSI design principles and Telecommunications Distribution Methods Manual (TDMM).

National Electrical Code (NEC), International Building Code (IBC), and other applicable regulations.

Project planning, scheduling, and documentation practices.

Emerging technologies in structured cabling and IT infrastructure.

Ability to:


Interpret and produce technical drawings and specifications.

Communicate complex technical information to non-technical stakeholders.

Work both independently and as part of a cross-functional team.

Manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Education/Certification:


Bachelor’s degree in engineering, telecommunications, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience may be accepted.

Active RCDD certification (BICSI) required.

Additional certifications in AutoCAD, Revit, or related design tools preferred.

Physical Demands:


Physical demands are representative of those that an employee must meet to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. While performing this job, the employee may occasionally be required to visit construction sites and be exposed to prevailing weather conditions.

Sit or stand at a desk and use a computer workstation for up to 6 hours per day.

Reach and use hands and fingers to operate design equipment or controls.

Walk through construction sites, climb stairs, and traverse uneven terrain as needed.

Occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.
