Telecom Implementation Manager information

What is a telecom implementation manager?

Telecom Implementation Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the deployment and integration of telecommunications systems and networks. They coordinate projects involving the installation, configuration, and testing of telecom equipment, often working with vendors, engineers, and technical teams to ensure timely and efficient implementation. Their duties also include managing budgets, schedules, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations. By bridging the gap between technical teams and business objectives, they help organizations deliver reliable communication services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a telecom implementation manager?

To thrive as a Telecom Implementation Manager, you need strong project management abilities, technical knowledge of telecommunications networks, and a relevant degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with tools like MS Project, AutoCAD, and industry certifications such as PMP or Prince2 is highly valued. Exceptional organizational, leadership, and communication skills help you coordinate cross-functional teams and manage client expectations. These skills ensure smooth project delivery, cost control, and alignment with both technical requirements and stakeholder goals.

What are some common challenges faced by telecom implementation managers during large-scale network rollouts?

Telecom Implementation Managers often encounter challenges such as coordinating multiple vendors, managing tight project timelines, and addressing unexpected technical issues on-site. Ensuring effective communication between engineering teams, contractors, and clients is crucial to prevent delays and cost overruns. Additionally, adapting to changing regulatory requirements and maintaining high standards for safety and quality can add complexity to the role. Successful managers develop strong organizational and problem-solving skills to navigate these obstacles and keep projects on track.

Why this Role

Ready to lead innovative design projects in telecommunications? Join Encepta's dynamic team and help build the networks that connect communities across Canada!

We’re seeking a Senior Telecommunications OSP Designer to join our growing design team and support complex outside plant infrastructure projects across Western Canada.

Join our team to create the infrastructure that powers connectivity nationwide. As a Telecommunications Designer, you'll be responsible for drafting and designing telecommunications infrastructure, including civil, cable, and pole line design for fibre networks.

You'll work independently on multiple design types, tackling complex design challenges while collaborating with team members and external stakeholders. If you're detail-oriented, technically proficient, and passionate about telecommunications design and structural analysis, we invite you to join our innovative team in building the networks of tomorrow!

What You’ll Be Responsible For

Reporting to the Manager, Operations, you will be responsible for creating and managing telecommunications OSP design projects from intake through to construction-ready outputs.

Collaborating closely with Project Managers, technical field staff, drafters, engineers, and municipal partners, your responsibilities will include:

  • Design & Drafting: Create outside plant telecommunications designs including civil, cable, and pole line designs for fibre networks (GPON/FTTP), copper, coax cable, HFC systems. Perform 2-D CAD drafting and conduct site visits for measurements and documentation.
  • Project Management: Handle projects from start to finish, including planning, status monitoring, addressing issues, and ensuring successful outcomes. Coordinate effectively with team members and external stakeholders.
  • Technical Leadership: Assist and train junior designers, participate in research and development projects, and perform quality assurance reviews when needed. Demonstrate a willingness to both be mentored and mentor others as the team grows.
  • Standards & Quality: Apply industry specifications and standards correctly while upholding training, operating, and health and safety procedures. Maintain high-quality design outputs across all projects, and confidently defend design decisions with stakeholders while balancing technical, operational, and customer considerations.

What Success Looks Like

In this role, success means being able to step into complex design work with confidence and independence. Within your first 12–18 months, you'll be:

  • Managing multiple telecommunications design projects while meeting timeline and budget requirements
  • Performing Professional Line/Pole Line Assignments (PLA) with confidence and accuracy
  • Building strong relationships with clients, municipalities, and other stakeholders
  • Identifying and implementing process improvements for greater efficiency
  • Leading and mentoring junior team members in design work
  • Adapting to changing project requirements while maintaining quality standards
  • Creating comprehensive documentation and maintaining project metrics
  • Expanding your expertise across multiple design areas including GPON, FTTx, civil works, and pole line design

What We're Looking For

  • Education: University/College/Technical School Graduate or equivalent combination of experience and training. Professional designations like P.L., PTech, AScT, CET, CTech, or EIT are considered for advancement.
  • Experience: 5+ years of experience in drafting and designing work for civil, utility, or telecom-related projects.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficient in AutoCAD and Spatial Net. Intermediate understanding of OSP design methods including GPON, FTTx, Building Entrances, MDU, Civil, Copper, Pole Lines, and Feeder Fibre.
  • Cross-functional Skills: Ability to perform work in at least two design areas or mastery of commonly used design work types. Comfortable taking on new and innovative types of design work outside of one’s comfort zone.
  • Industry Knowledge: Intermediate understanding and application of industry specifications and standards.
  • Quality Focus: Careful attention to detail with ability to QA personal work and others' work as needed.
  • Software Skills: Proficient in Google Suite or equivalent Microsoft applications.
  • Communication & Confidence: Strong interpersonal skills with a customer service-oriented approach. Able to clearly articulate and stand behind design decisions with confidence while remaining open to constructive feedback.
  • Adaptability & Growth: Ability to learn quickly and adapt to evolving technologies, methods, and client requirements.
