Schedule: Monday to Friday (10 hours + days, weekends, on-call)
About the Role
The Field Supervisor oversees the daily operations of underground utility locating teams, ensuring accurate, safe, and efficient performance of utility locates across assigned territories. This role provides leadership, technical support, training, and quality control for field technicians while serving as the primary liaison between field staff, dispatch, management, contractors, and utility partners. The Supervisor plays a critical role in damageprevention efforts and compliance with state OneCall (811) laws, safety standards, and company procedures.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Team Leadership: Coach, mentor, and evaluate field technicians; lead onboarding and conduct field ride-alongs.
  • Quality & Operations: Audit completed locates, handle high-risk assignments, investigate damages, and oversee equipment calibration and maintenance.
  • Safety & Compliance: Enforce APWA standards, OSHA rules, and PPE requirements; lead team safety meetings and toolbox talks.
  • Communication: Serve as the main point of contact for contractors, utility owners, and homeowners; coordinate with dispatch on schedules and workloads.
  • Reporting: Review work orders for accuracy and track team productivity and compliance metrics.
Knowledge, Skills, & Experience:
  • Required Education: High School Diploma or GED
  • Preferred Education: Associate Degree 
  • Required License: Valid driver’s license
  • Preferred Certifications: Locator Certification, OSHA 10/30, First Aid/CPR, or damage investigation background
  • Screening: Pass pre-employment DOT drug test and participate in Vannguard’s Drug-Free Workplace Program (Required)
  • Experience: 2+ years leading a team of 15+ individuals or equivalent experience working in a fast-paced team environment
  • Required Technical Skills: Basic knowledge and use of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, etc.) / Basic understanding of ticketing software
  • Preferred Technical Skills: Strong knowledge of electric, gas, telecom, water, sewer, and fiber systems; proficiency with EM locators and GPS/GIS tech  Strong Microsoft Office Suite 
Physical Demands & Working Conditions:
  • Driving: Sit and drive between 50-300+ miles daily in assigned district
  • Mobility: Regularly get in and out of a vehicle, standing, walking, kneeling, and bending.
  • Lifting: Ability to lift and/or move 50-150 pounds
  • Environment: Work outdoors in all weather conditions, year round
  • Location: Multiple field locations daily
