Tekla Structures information

What is a Tekla Structures?

A Tekla Structures job typically involves using Tekla Structures, a Building Information Modeling (BIM) software, to create detailed structural designs and fabrication drawings. Professionals in this role, such as structural engineers, detailers, and BIM modelers, work on steel, concrete, and other structural projects. Their responsibilities include creating 3D models, generating shop drawings, ensuring accuracy in designs, and collaborating with engineers and fabricators. Tekla Structures jobs are common in construction, manufacturing, and engineering industries where precise structural modeling is required.

What does a Tekla Structures do?

In a Tekla Structures position, your daily tasks typically include creating and updating 3D structural models, generating accurate fabrication drawings, and coordinating with architects, engineers, and other project stakeholders. You'll review design changes, resolve modeling challenges, and ensure that all documentation meets project requirements and industry standards. Collaboration with other team members through project management software and BIM platforms is often part of the day. These responsibilities help keep construction projects running smoothly by facilitating precise coordination and reducing errors during fabrication and assembly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a Tekla Structures position?

To thrive as a Tekla Structures professional, you need a strong background in structural engineering concepts, 3D modeling, and construction detailing, often backed by a relevant degree or technical diploma. Expertise in Tekla Structures software, BIM workflows, and familiarity with project collaboration platforms are typically required, with certifications in Tekla adding value. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork and communication skills set top candidates apart. Mastering these skills ensures accurate, collaborative, and efficient delivery of structural models and documentation in complex construction projects.

Is Tekla Structures difficult to learn?

Tekla Structures is a complex software used for structural modeling and detailing, and it has a steep learning curve for new users. Proficiency typically requires training, practice, and understanding of structural engineering concepts, but many users become proficient with dedicated effort and available tutorials. Learning time varies based on prior experience with similar CAD tools and the complexity of projects handled.

Job description

Job Title: Engineering Manager - T-Line Poles & Monopoles
Location: Houston, TX / Hybrid
Department: Structural Engineering
Position Type: Full-Time
Reports To: Vice President of Operations

About SteelCon Inc.

SteelCon Inc. is rapidly expanding its in-house manufacturing of utility-scale tapered steel transmission poles and monopoles. We are seeking a senior structural engineer to serve as Engineering Manager - Transmission Pole Structures to own internal delegated design, direct outside engineering partners, and manage all outsourced structural engineering work.

Position Summary

The Engineering Manager serves as SteelCon's chief technical expert in tapered tubular steel monopoles and transmission line structures. This role owns structural calculations, load table validations, FEA modeling, and ASCE 48 compliance while actively managing external engineering firms and outsourced engineering packages to support company capacity and project deliverables.

Key Responsibilities

  • Delegated Design & Structural Analysis: Perform and review structural calculations, finite element analysis (FEA), and PLS-POLE modeling for utility-scale tapered monopoles, H-frames, and multi-circuit structures.
  • Outsourced Engineering Management: Manage external engineering firms, consultants, and third-party engineering groups. Assign, track, review, and sign off on all outsourced calculation packages, structural models, and sealed submittals.
  • ASCE 48 Compliance: Apply ASCE 48, NESC, and client-mandated design parameters (including Method 4 criteria) across internal and external design deliverables.
  • Client EOR Liaison: Serve as the lead technical point of contact with utility and client Engineers of Record. Clear structural holds, address RFIs, and negotiate design modifications alongside internal and external team members.
  • Connection & Pole Design: Design structural connections, base plates, anchor bolt patterns, flange connections, and slip-joint lap lengths optimized for shop fabrication and field erection.
  • Pre-Bid Technical Support: Partner with estimating and project management to validate load trees, verify material stress limits, and optimize pole geometry during the bidding stage.

Required Qualifications

  • Education & License: B.S. in Civil/Structural Engineering. Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required; Structural Engineer (S.E.) preferred.
  • Experience: 7+ years in structural engineering, with at least 4+ years specializing directly in tapered steel monopoles and transmission line pole design. Proven experience directing external engineering consultants and third-party engineering vendors.
  • Software Mastery: Expert-level proficiency in PLS-POLE (Power Line Systems) and FEA software. Familiarity with Tekla Structures or CAD modeling workflows.
  • Codes & Standards: Complete mastery of ASCE 48, AISC 360, AWS D1.1, NESC, and utility design standards.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Submittal Speed: Turnaround time for complete PLS models and structural calc packages (internal + external) < 10 business days.
  • Outsourced QA/QC: First-pass acceptance rate for calculations submitted by external engineering partners > 90% First-Pass.
  • Engineering Hold Clearance: Resolution time for client engineering holds and structural RFIs < 48 hours.
