National Dance Institute of New Mexico is founded with the knowledge that the arts have a unique power to engage and motivate children. The purpose of our distinctive programs is to help children develop discipline, a standard of excellence, and a belief in themselves that will carry over into all aspects of their lives.ย 

Purpose ofย The Hiland Assistant Artistic Directorย 

The Hiland Assistant Artistic Directorย is responsible to the Hiland Artistic Director to achieve the mission and uphold the policies of NDI New Mexico. This role ensures the quality and success of Hiland After-School programming and serves as a leader in teaching, curriculum implementation, school culture, and performance standards. The Assistant Artistic Director supports both the artistic and administrative success of the Hiland Program and is an integral member of the Artistic Staffย 

Primary Responsibilitiesย 

Leadershipย andย Programย Developmentย 

The Hiland Assistant Artistic Director is a keyย partnerย to the Artistic Directorย in all aspects ofย the Hiland After-School Programโ€™s success.ย ย Their leadership supports theย achievement of theย vision ofย theย program which includes significant expansion of programย offerings, student enrollment,ย and community participation, andย high-qualityย classes and performances in alignment with NDI New Mexicoโ€™s Impact Model for Youth and Families.ย ย ย 

  • Develop,ย expand, cultivate,ย and overseeย theย growthย and operationsย ofย theย Communityย Danceย Programย at The Hiland.ย This includesย all Jr/Sr Divisionย Hip-Hop andย Breaking classes, 16+ย teen adultย classes and teen/pre-teen classes in Ballet, Modern, Jazz & Contemporary.ย ย ย 

  • Expand Communityย trackย programming to includeย other discipline areas such asย different stylesย ofย commercial dance, global dance forms andย teen/adultย classes, focused on building a robust offering ofย recreationalย yet impactfulย programming for pre-teen and teen youth.ย Theย Communityย Program currently encompasses 16 classes per week and 150-200 students with growth to at least 20ย classesย per week andย 200-300 students for 26/27 season.ย ย ย 

  • Driveย enrollment of new students and retention of current students and families,ย throughย developing, executing, and measuring strategies that promoteย growthย and alignmentย of the program.ย ย ย 

  • Developย curriculum for a robust program that attractsย children and teensย and isย grounded in positive youth and community development.ย ย ย 

  • Build and strengthen family engagement to foster a positiveย schoolย community culture,ย and encourage family involvementย ย 

  • Serve as an advocate for the organization with all stakeholders and the public, and communicate and promote the organizationโ€™s vision, mission, andย objectivesย internally and externally.ย ย 

  • Assistย with talent management, including recruiting, developing, andย retainingย high-performing artistic staff.ย ย ย 

  • Coachย and develop artistic staff to uphold and implement the NDI-NM artistic standards for classes,ย special events, andย performancesย ย 

  • Participate in artistic management meetings, supporting the creation and measurement of annual goals in relation to Community Programsย ย 

Directing,ย Teaching & Choreographyย ย 

  • Teachย approximatelyย 8โ€“12ย hours per weekย in both Community Program classes and Junior/Seniorย Division classes.ย The role should be a strong leader in teaching, usingย methodologies that supportย individual student impact,ย team-building in classroom, inspiringย students to progress in the program, and connect their teaching to theย overarching goals and philosophy of the organization and collaborating with their colleagues to build community in studios, hallways,ย on stage and in the audience.ย ย ย ย ย ย 

  • Assistย and Supportย Hiland Artistic Directorย with the Artistic oversightย andย execution ofย theย Hilandย Jr/Srย Showcases. This includes class visits, giving feedbackย and directionย to teaching artists,ย andย planning, leadingย and directing aspects of theย Hilandย showcasesย in support of ensuringย a high levelย ofย artisticย quality and cohesionย thatย integratesย and supportsย the work of the entire staff and student bodyย ย ย 

  • Createย and direct or co-directย special eventsย and performances for the Community programsย ย 

  • Teach,ย choreograph, and direct as neededย Hiland Summer Programsย and Spring Break Campsย ย ย ย 

  • Substitute classes asย requiredย ย 

Administration and Productionย ย 

  • Produce the Junior and Senior Showcase performances, including coordination of productionย logisticsย including but not limited to:ย Create andย maintainย production schedules, cast lists, music and costume requirements, and other related tasks; hold team accountable for meeting those schedules and deadlines at the highest level of quality.ย ย 

  • Collaborateย with the Hilandย Programย Producer, Hilandย Artistic Director, and Production Managerย to manage timelines for program deliverables.ย Escalateย any issuesย with schedule and deadlines to Artistic Directorย & producerย in a timely manner.ย ย ย 

  • Scheduleย and invite all participants toย start-up and wrap-up meetings,ย andย supportย cross-team communications and processes.ย ย 

  • Serve asย a liaisonย between the Artisticย Director and After-School families to ensureย timelyย and clear communication,ย particularย to butย notย limitedย to,ย topicsย aroundย dance education, behavioral or discipline, andย dance relatedย opportunitiesย for students.ย Follow protocol to solve issues and keep theย Artisticย Director informed of progress and results.ย ย 

  • Perform front office administrative dutiesย as neededย including greeting families, processing payments, and general office tasks.ย ย 

General and Other Artistic Dutiesย ย 

  • Maintain regular office hours.ย ย 

  • Attend staff and artistic meetings asย required.ย ย 

  • Attending all performances and events.ย ย 

  • Perform other duties as assigned.ย ย 

Working Conditions, Environment, and Physical Requirementsย ย 

  • Duties are performed in various environments, including NDI New Mexico offices, schools, and community locations.ย ย 

  • Requires reliable transportation and reimbursable in-state travel.ย ย

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Requiredย Job-Specific Requirementsย ย 

  • 2โ€“5 years of experience in teaching, choreography, and directingย danceย programsย ย 

  • Professional dance performance experience and/or a bachelorโ€™s degree in a dance-related field.ย ย 

  • Demonstrated leadership and experience in artistic program development.ย ย 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.ย ย 

  • Experience managing artistic projects and staff.ย ย
