Surgical Tech - Scrub Tech Job Summary
The OR Surgical Tech - Scrub Tech maintains a proper sterile field during surgical procedures and provides technical assistance to surgeons, surgical nurses, or anesthesiologists. The OR Scrub Tech hands instruments and supplies to surgeons and surgeons' assistants, holds retractors and cut sutures, and performs other tasks as directed by the surgeon during operation. The OR Scrub Tech prepares patients for surgery, including positioning patients on the operating table and covering them with sterile surgical drapes to prevent exposure. This role assists the surgical team in scrubbing and putting on gloves, masks, and surgical clothing and washes and sterilizes equipment, using germicides and sterilizers. This position monitors and continually assesses operating room conditions, including patient and surgical team needs and prepares dressings or bandages and may apply or assist with their application following surgery.
Requirements
Surgical Tech - Scrub Tech Responsibilities & Duties
  • A Counts sponges, needles and instruments before and after operation. Observes patient's vital signs to assess physical condition.
  • Maintains knowledge of sterile technique and assists in the primary and secondary scrub roles in the operating room.
  • Safely and accurately administers medication and IV solutions, if licensed to do so.
  • Completes duties of surgical services personnel as outlined in policy and procedures and as delegated to do so by OR Registered Nursing staff.
  • Maintain supply of fluids, such as plasma, saline, blood, or glucose, for use during operations.
  • Prepare, care for, and dispose of tissue specimens take for laboratory analysis.
  • Maintains patient safety during all aspects of nursing interventions and documents measures and responses in patient's medical record, if licensed to perform.
  • Operates, assembles, adjusts, and/or monitors sterilizers, lights, suction machines, and diagnostic equipment to ensure proper operation.
  • Assists in assembly, wrapping, and sterilization of instruments for Surgical Services and other departments. Places Equipment and supplies and arranges instruments according to instructions and preference cards.
  • Performs routine cleaning and organization functions for the physical setup of the operating room.
  • Works in coordination with OR Nurse Coordinator to stock and order all routine supplies for the operating room and central supplies and maintains files and records of surgical procedures
