What is a technology director?

A technology director refers to two distinct positions. The first is the person in charge of technology at a school or in a school district. As an educational technology director, your duties are to determine the technology needs of students and teachers and develop partnerships with vendors to secure classroom technology within your budget. You also oversee other technical administrators and workers during the daily operations of the technology department. At a company, a corporate technology director has similar responsibilities but is not focused on educational technology, but rather on infrastructure and applications that enhance business productivity.

What does a technology director do?

A Technology Director oversees the technology strategy and infrastructure of an organization. They are responsible for managing IT teams, implementing new systems, ensuring cybersecurity, and aligning technology initiatives with business goals. Their duties often include budgeting, policy development, evaluating emerging technologies, and collaborating with other departments. The Technology Director plays a key role in ensuring that technology resources effectively support the organization's operations and growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technology director, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technology Director, you need strong leadership abilities, deep technical expertise, and experience in IT strategy, typically supported by a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with enterprise IT systems, cloud platforms, cybersecurity frameworks, and certifications such as PMP or CISSP are often required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills set successful Technology Directors apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial for aligning technology initiatives with organizational goals and ensuring secure, efficient technology operations.

How does a technology director typically collaborate with other departments to drive organizational goals?

A Technology Director plays a crucial role in aligning the IT strategy with the broader objectives of the organization. This involves regular collaboration with leaders from departments such as operations, finance, marketing, and human resources to understand their technological needs and ensure IT initiatives support their goals. Technology Directors often participate in cross-functional meetings, manage interdepartmental projects, and communicate technical concepts in accessible terms. Effective collaboration helps streamline workflows, support digital transformation, and maximize the impact of technology investments.

Job description

JLL empowers you to shape a brighter way.
Our people at JLL are shaping the future of real estate for a better world by combining world class services, advisory and technology for our clients. We are committed to hiring the best, most talented people and empowering them to thrive, grow meaningful careers and to find a place where they belong. Whether you've got deep experience in commercial real estate, skilled trades or technology, or you're looking to apply your relevant experience to a new industry, join our team as we help shape a brighter way forward.
Role Purpose
The Account Digital Transformation Director is the senior technology, data, analytics, and business intelligence leader for a strategic account serving a major multinational financial institution. This is an embedded, account-dedicated leadership role responsible for translating technology and data capabilities into measurable business outcomes for both the client and JLL.
This role owns the technology and data strategy, operational performance, analytics and BI roadmap, and multi-year digital transformation initiatives across the account. This is not a purely advisory role: the leader is accountable for outcomes, for the performance of the technology and data function, and for building and leading the team that delivers them. The role is expected to challenge legacy operating models, drive change at pace, and make the account a proof point for how JLL delivers digital transformation at enterprise scale.
Reporting & Structure
This role reports dual-reports to the Head of Technology Advisory, Financial Services, and the account's Transformation Executive for strategy and execution. The role leads a team of technology, data, analytics, and BI professionals supporting the account and is responsible for shaping and evolving that organizational structure to deliver on account priorities.
Key Responsibilities
  • Own the account's technology, data, analytics, and BI strategy, and translate it into a prioritized, outcome-based roadmap.
  • Lead technology operations, performance, and governance - accountable for delivery and for measurable gains in efficiency, cost, risk, and user experience.
  • Drive a multi-year transformation portfolio sequenced to measurable value and aligned to client and JLL objectives.
  • Capture opportunities across automation, AI, data products, revenue growth, and digital enablement.
  • Deliver a multi-year enterprise data-platform modernization on time and on budget, building a world-class data and AI foundation.
  • Build executive business cases that lift client outcomes while strengthening JLL margin, scalability, and commercial position.
  • Build and lead a future-ready team - realign to priorities and attract, develop, and retain the talent to deliver at pace.
  • Own executive relationships across client, JLL, and technology stakeholders; shape strategic planning and renewal, and drive adoption of enterprise standards and data governance.

Required Qualifications
This role requires a proven transformation leader who has led teams through change at pace - not an individual-contributor advisor or a pure consultant. Candidates must demonstrate:
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, IT, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 10+ years owning a technology, data, or transformation function - strategy, roadmap, budget, and delivery outcomes.
  • Proven leadership of teams driving enterprise change at pace: building structure, creating urgency, and delivering through others.
  • Experience spanning strategy/advisory and hands-on delivery in corporate real estate, technology services, or consulting.
  • Track record building C-suite relationships and delivering quantifiable business value.
  • Delivery of data, analytics, and BI capabilities and enterprise data-platform modernization, with fluency in CRE platforms (IWMS, PropTech, smart buildings, IoT), AI/automation, and modern data architectures.
  • Experience in, or serving, large financial-services or other highly regulated environments.
  • Certifications in transformation, program leadership, or technology management (preferred).

Key Skills & Competencies
  • Transformation leadership - sets direction, drives urgency, and delivers change through a team in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment.
  • Operational ownership - comfortable being accountable for performance, delivery, and commercial outcomes, not solely strategy.
  • Executive presence and credibility with senior client and internal stakeholders.
  • Commercial acumen - builds business cases that create mutual value for the client and JLL.
  • Data and analytics fluency - translates data capability into decisions and outcomes.
  • Exceptional communication, facilitation, and the ability to influence across globally distributed, cross-functional teams.
