This position is open for external candidates only to apply.
What You Will Do
This position will be filled at the Engineering Technologist 1 or 2 level, depending on the selected candidate's experience. Candidates hired at the higher level will take on expanded scope and responsibility.
Engineering Technologist 1 ($87,800 - $143,000)
In this role, you will help ensure reliable operation and continuous improvement of the high-power RF (HPRF) systems that drive the accelerator at LANSCE. Your work will directly support mission-critical beam delivery for multiple research programs.
Working on a multidisciplinary team, you will troubleshoot and maintain complex RF and high-voltage systems, minimizing downtime and improving system performance. You will contribute to the development and operation of high-power RF test stands and play a hands-on role in advancing next-generation technologies, including klystron amplifiers and solid-state pulsed power systems.
You will also generate and analyze system data to identify performance trends, guide design improvements, and increase reliability. Your contributions will support the refinement of klystrons and modulators and help shape future upgrades to critical accelerator systems.
This role includes shared responsibility for keeping systems running during operations, including participating in an on-call rotation (approximately one week per month during the operating season which is usually 7 months out of the year).
Beyond day-to-day operations, you will help plan and execute maintenance and upgrade projects, including high-voltage converter-modulator systems and advanced monitoring and control solutions. You will also serve as a resource to the broader team, applying your expertise in power electronics and vacuum tube-based RF systems to solve complex technical challenges.
Engineering Technologist 2 ($96,600 - $158,000)
In addition to the responsibilities of the Technologist 1 role, this position offers greater ownership and leadership in key projects at LANSCE.
At this level, you will work closely with senior RF engineers to define requirements and support the procurement of advanced systems, including klystron amplifiers and solid-state high-voltage pulsed power equipment. You will play a central role in bringing new technology into operation.
You will also lead the installation and commissioning of a new high-power RF test stand, coordinating across teams to ensure successful deployment. This is a hands-on leadership opportunity where you will take projects from the planning stage through to execution and startup.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Engineering Technologist 1:
- Experience in electrical engineering areas related to microwave systems, such as high-voltage or pulsed
- power, RF amplifiers, or RF components.
- Hands-on electrical, electronics, and basic mechanical skills (lab or industrial setting).
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, diagrams, and technical documentation.
- Experience creating electrical/electronic schematics using CAD tools.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience working with teams to design, test, or install high-power RF or high-voltage systems.
- Familiarity with vacuum tube-based RF amplifiers and high-voltage systems.
- Ability to apply engineering principles and best practices in design and implementation.
- Experience translating system requirements into practical designs.
Additional Job Requirements for Engineering Technologist 2:
- Experience leading the design, development, testing, and installation of high-power RF and high-voltage systems.
- Demonstrated technical leadership in advancing RF amplifiers and high-voltage system designs.
- Proven ability to lead engineering design using best practices and sound engineering principles.
- Ability to lead installation and commissioning of a new RF test station.
- Ability to design and implement a system to acquire, organize and analyze RF system performance data that will lead to the prediction of failures before they occur.
Education/Experience at Level 1: Position requires a bachelor's degree in engineering technology, science, math or related degree and two (2) years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at Level 2: Position requires a bachelor's degree in engineering technology, science, math or related degree from an accredited institution and five (5) years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience contributing to the design, testing, and installation of high-power RF, high-voltage, or pulsed-power systems.
- Experience working on a team to develop RF amplifiers and/or high-voltage systems.
- Hands-on experience assembling, installing, testing, and troubleshooting RF or pulsed-power systems.
- Experience with high-voltage DC and pulsed-power systems.
- Familiarity with circuit design and simulation tools (e.g., PSpice, Multisim, LTspice).
- Experience working at an accelerator facility (preferred).
- Ability to obtain a Q clearance (typically requires U.S. citizenship; not required for this position).
Note to Applicants: To be considered for this position, applicants must submit a comprehensive cover letter addressing: 1) each of the Minimum Job Requirements and the Education/Experience requirements at the applicable level or levels; and 2) the Desired Qualifications and Skills.
