Job description

Be Here. Be Great. Working for a leader in the insurance industry means opportunity for you. Great American Insurance Group's member companies are subsidiaries of American Financial Group. We combine a "small company" culture where your ideas will be heard with "big company" expertise to help you succeed. With over 30 specialty and property and casualty operations, there are always opportunities here to learn and grow.

At Great American, we value and recognize the benefits derived when people with different backgrounds and experiences work together to achieve business results. Our goal is to create a workplace where all employees feel included, empowered, and enabled to perform at their best.

This position is not eligible for employment visa sponsorship. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for current or future sponsorship.

The P&C Corporate Claims Division consists of over 100 professionals who support Great American's highly-diversified P&C claims operations. The division's functional teams include Claims Practices, Claims Counsel, Claims Support Services, Claims Resolution Services and Legacy Claims.

Great American's Corporate Claims Resolution Services (CRS) team receives a variety of claims from numerous Great American Insurance Company divisions involving property, general liability, professional liability, ocean marine, commercial auto, employer's liability, aviation, and employment practices liability. In addition, CRS handles Great American legacy claims and supports new startup divisions with claims handling.

Claims Resolution Services is seeking a Claims Technical Director to focus primarily on handling a growing book of property and construction defect business, although the opportunity to handle other lines of business including Ocean Marine and Aviation also exists. We are seeking a self-starter with a willingness and ability to cross train in multiple lines of business and become licensed in all states requiring an adjuster's license. In addition, effective written, verbal and listening skills are required, along with strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Great American's culture is built on connection, shared learning, and strong relationships. To support this, candidates located in Cincinnati in this role are expected to be on-site four days a week, with the flexibility to work one day remotely. Core inoffice days are Tuesday-Thursday, with the fourth day determined by business needs. Qualified candidates located outside of the greater Cincinnati area will be considered to work remotely with travel to Cincinnati as needed.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Manages a book of claims, including construction defect and property claims, involving significant size and/or complexity.
  • Responsible for conducting thorough investigations, critically assessing coverage and liability, and formulating strategic approaches to claim resolution.
  • Works toward the resolution of claims files, and attends arbitrations, mediations, settlement conferences or trials, as necessary.
  • Negotiates settlements within prescribed authority and submit recommendations to supervisors on cases exceeding personal authority.
  • Conveys highly complex information (coverage, recommendations, decisions, outcomes, etc.) to all appropriate parties, maintaining a professional demeanor in all situations.
  • Ensures that claims handling is conducted in compliance with applicable statutes, regulations, and other legal requirements, and that all applicable company procedures and policies are followed.
  • Serves as the technical expert on a product(s).
  • Evaluates and makes recommendations to executive management on internal and external issues of strategic importance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • Generally, a minimum of 10+ years of experience in property and casualty claims including general liability or property claims litigation experience. Prior experience with construction defect claims is strongly preferred.
  • Completion of or continuing progress toward a professional designation preferred, such as Associate in Claims (AIC) or Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU).
  • Operates at the highest authority level on complex, high-impact assignments, possessing extensive technical knowledge and skills in both product and industry.
