Technical Writer Developer information

What is a Technical Writer Developer?

A Technical Writer Developer is a professional who creates clear, concise, and accurate documentation for software products, APIs, and technical processes. They often have a background in software development and use their technical knowledge to produce guides, tutorials, and reference materials that help users and developers understand and use technology effectively. In addition to writing, they may collaborate with engineers, product managers, and designers to ensure documentation is accurate and user-friendly. Their work bridges the gap between complex technical concepts and end-users or developers who need to implement or integrate technology. Technical Writer Developers play a critical role in improving product usability and reducing support costs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Technical Writer Developer?

To thrive as a Technical Writer Developer, you need strong technical writing skills, a solid understanding of software development concepts, and often a degree in English, Communications, Computer Science, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Markdown, XML, DITA, version control systems (e.g., Git), and content management systems is common, along with certifications such as Certified Professional Technical Communicator (CPTC). Excellent communication, attention to detail, and the ability to translate complex technical information into clear and user-friendly documentation are standout soft skills. These skills ensure accurate, accessible documentation that supports both developers and end users, enhancing product usability and reducing support needs.

How do Technical Writer Developers typically collaborate with engineering and product teams throughout a project?

Technical Writer Developers frequently work alongside engineering and product teams from the planning phase through to product release. They attend regular meetings to stay updated on product changes, gather technical details, and clarify complex concepts. This close collaboration ensures that documentation accurately reflects the latest features and technical standards. Additionally, they often review and test new software builds, provide feedback on usability, and adjust documentation as features evolve, helping to bridge the gap between technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What is the difference between Technical Writer Developer vs Technical Writer?

AspectTechnical Writer DeveloperTechnical Writer
CredentialsBachelor's in Technical Communication, Computer Science, or related fields; coding skills often preferredBachelor's in English, Communications, or related fields; strong writing skills required
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with developers, engineers, and product teams; often in tech companies or software firmsWorks independently or with subject matter experts; in publishing, tech, or corporate settings
Industry UsageCommon in software development, tech companies, and IT industriesWidespread across tech, manufacturing, healthcare, and corporate sectors

The main difference is that Technical Writer Developers combine technical writing with coding and development skills, often creating documentation that integrates with software or APIs. Technical Writers focus primarily on creating clear, user-friendly documentation without coding responsibilities. Both roles require strong communication skills, but Technical Writer Developers need additional technical expertise to bridge development and documentation effectively.

Key responsibilities

  • Write, edit, and produce technical content across the full business lifecycle, including proposals, technical data packages, and marketing collateral.

  • Lead proposal writing and coordination by interpreting solicitations, building compliant outlines, drafting technical and management volumes, and ensuring on-time submission.

  • Translate complex spacecraft, payload, and mission engineering inputs into clear, accurate, and persuasive documentation tailored to the audience.

Job description

K2 is building the largest and highest-power satellites ever flown, unlocking performance levels previously out of reach across every orbit. Backed by $450M from leading investors including Altimeter Capital, Redpoint Ventures, T. Rowe Price, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Alpine Space Ventures, and others โ€“ with an additional $500M in signed contracts across commercial and US government customers โ€“ weโ€™re mass-producing the highest-power satellite platforms ever built for missions from LEO to deep space.

The rise of heavy-lift launch vehicles is shifting the industry from an era of mass constraint to one of mass abundance, and we believe this new era demands a fundamentally different class of spacecraft. Engineered to survive the harshest radiation environments and to fully capitalize on todayโ€™s and tomorrowโ€™s massive rockets, K2 satellites deliver unmatched capability at constellation scale and across multiple orbits.

With multiple launches planned through 2026 and 2027, weโ€™re Building Bigger to develop the solar system and become a Kardashev Type II (K2) civilization. If you are a motivated individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment and youโ€™re excited about contributing to the success of a groundbreaking Series C space startup, weโ€™d love for you to apply.

The Role

As a Technical Writer at K2 Space, you will own the words that win work and deliver it. Youโ€™ll support the full arc of the business โ€” from early business development and capture, through compliant and compelling proposals, to the technical data packages and deliverables we owe customers on contract. Youโ€™ll translate complex spacecraft, payload, and mission engineering into clear, accurate, and persuasive documentation for commercial and US government audiences. Working shoulder-to-shoulder with program managers, mission engineers, and subject-matter experts, youโ€™ll turn raw technical inputs into polished narratives, manage document production under aggressive deadlines, and raise the bar on how K2 communicates in writing across every phase of a program.

Responsibilities
  • Write, edit, and produce content across the full business lifecycle โ€” business development and marketing collateral, white papers, proposals and proposal volumes, and on-contract technical deliverables
  • Lead proposal writing and coordination: interpret solicitations (RFPs, RFIs, BAAs), build compliant outlines and compliance matrices, draft and edit technical and management volumes, and drive documents to on-time submission
  • Distill inputs from mission engineers, program managers, and other SMEs into clear, accurate, and compelling narratives tailored to the audience
  • Partner across the organization to ensure documentation is accurate, consistent, and delivered on schedule under competing priorities
Qualifications
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in English, communications, journalism, engineering, a science discipline, or related field
  • 5+ years of professional technical writing experience, ideally in aerospace, defense, or another complex engineering domain
  • Demonstrated experience writing and coordinating proposals, including responses to US government solicitations
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a portfolio that shows the ability to make complex technical content clear and persuasive
  • Ability to interview subjectโ€‘matter experts and independently produce accurate technical content from sparse or rough inputs
  • Ability to manage multiple documents and deadlines simultaneously in a fastโ€‘paced, autonomously driven, and demanding startup atmosphere
Nice to Have
  • Experience with spacecraft, satellite, or payload programs
  • Familiarity with government contracting vehicles, CDRLs, DIDs, and proposal compliance practices
  • Proficiency with graphics and layout tools (Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, or equivalent)
  • Experience building and maintaining content libraries, style guides, and documentation templates
  • APMP certification or equivalent proposalโ€‘management credential
Additional Requirements
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time
  • Active Top Secret or Top Secret SCI clearance preferred; willing to pursue and maintain a clearance if not already cleared
  • Ability to work irregular business hours to support proposals or critical project timelines
Compensation and Benefits
  • Base salary range for this role is $100,000 โ€“ $140,000 + equity in the company
  • Salary will be based on several factors including, but not limited to: knowledge and skills, education, and experience level
  • Comprehensive benefits package including paid time off, medical/dental/vision coverage, life insurance, paid parental leave, and many other perks
Export Compliance

As defined in the ITAR, โ€œU.S. Personsโ€ include U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents (i.e., Green Card holders), and certain protected individuals (e.g., refugees/asylees, American Samoans). Please consult with a knowledgeable advisor if you are unsure whether you are a โ€œU.S. Person.โ€

The person hired for this role will have access to information and items controlled by U.S. export control regulations, including the export control regulations outlined in the International Traffic in Arms Regulation (ITAR). The person hired for this role must therefore either be a โ€œU.S. personโ€ as defined by 22 C.F.R. ยง 120.15 or otherwise eligible for a federally issued export control license.
