Major Duties
Under the general supervision of the Department Chair, the Stockroom Support Technician brings laboratory expertise to a collaborative academic environment to prepare teaching materials, support chemistry labs, maintain equipment and inventories. The incumbent assists faculty and students, updates instructional resources, and helps ensure safe, organized, hands-on learning experiences across the department daily.
  • Works alone or as a team member to prepare materials for teaching laboratories, including gases, liquids, solutions and solids, unknowns, glassware, and other technical equipment, while following all applicable laboratory safety rules, chemical hygiene plans, hazardous waste procedures, established departmental protocols and campus standards.
  • Assists instructors in selected general, organic, analytical, and physical chemistry laboratories by operating instruments.
  • Assists in minor maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment used for student laboratories, including general, organic, analytical, and physical chemistry instrumentation such as spectroscopy, electrochemistry, and chromatography.
  • Updates instructional materials, laboratory documentation, and instructional support materials using established procedures.
  • Provides instruction and guidance to faculty, staff, students, and student assistants on the proper use of laboratory procedures, equipment, and instructional materials.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (goggles, gloves, laboratory coat and/or respirator) for extended periods.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Equivalent to two years of experience providing instructional support services for a Chemistry or Biochemistry unit or related discipline, acting as a student assistant, or producing materials or supplies related to the discipline. OR
  • Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be substituted for one year of the required experience. OR
  • Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a related discipline may be substituted for the experience.
  • Four-year college degree in chemistry or biochemistry is strongly recommended.
  • Experience in academic laboratory preparation and experience with handling chemical substances, including hazardous materials, is highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Working knowledge of preparing gases, liquids, solutions, solids, unknowns, glassware, and technical equipment for instructional laboratories while following chemical hygiene plans, hazardous waste procedures, departmental protocols, and campus safety standards.
  • Ability to operate chemistry laboratory instruments, distribute and retrieve materials and equipment, maintain accurate records, staff a stockroom service window, and provide responsive instructional support to faculty, students, and research personnel.
  • Working knowledge of routine troubleshooting, minor maintenance, and repair of chemistry laboratory instrumentation, including spectroscopy, electrochemistry, and chromatography equipment, with the ability to maintain accurate supply, equipment, usage, and inventory records.
  • Ability to prepare, revise, test, and update laboratory exercises, manuals, videos, and supporting documentation; provide clear guidance on laboratory procedures and equipment; communicate routine issues and recommendations; and collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and student assistants.
  • Familiarity with scientific instrumentation, set-up, calibration, and repair is recommended; experience in spectroscopy (UV-Vis, fluorescence, IR, ICP-MS), electrochemistry (CV, RDE), and chromatography (HPLC, GC, GC-MS) preferred.
  • Experience with chemical identification and safety procedures is recommended.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
  • The university offers an excellent benefits package, including but not limited to: medical, dental, vision, retirement & savings, tuition waiver, and more.
  • Classification: 1615 / Instructional Support Technician / 1
  • The anticipated HIRING RANGE is $4184 - $4268 per month, dependent on qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is: $4184 - $6096 per month.
  • HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday. May include evenings and weekends.
  • This is a Regular position with a one-year probationary period.
  • The individual hired for this role will physically work on-campus in Northridge. This is not a telecommute position.
