Electrical Controls Engineer Jobs
STS Technical Services is hiring an Electrical Controls Engineer in Butler, Wisconsin. This role is ideal for an experienced controls engineer with strong PLC programming, servo drive, HMI, automation, electrical panel design and project management experience.
The Electrical Controls Engineer will design, implement, troubleshoot and optimize advanced automation and control systems for manufacturing equipment. This position supports new and existing systems including PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, servo drives and safety devices while helping deliver projects from concept through installation, start-up and commissioning.
Position Summary
The Electrical Controls Engineer is responsible for creating, modifying and maintaining controls specifications for manufacturing equipment and automated systems. This role requires technical expertise in system integration, PLC programming, HMI development, motion control, safety programming, electrical panel layouts and project execution.
You will work closely with mechanical engineers, customers, vendors and internal teams to develop reliable, efficient and safe automation solutions that meet project requirements, customer expectations and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop electrical control systems for manufacturing equipment
  • Program PLCs and configure servo drives
  • Develop HMI systems and electrical panel layouts
  • Lead projects by delivering advanced technical solutions throughout the project lifecycle
  • Conduct project status reviews to ensure alignment with timelines, budgets and customer satisfaction
  • Develop system integration solutions for assembly line automation, motion control and safety programming
  • Maintain accurate documentation for electrical and control system designs, modifications and material lists
  • Partner with mechanical engineers to integrate electrical systems with machinery
  • Troubleshoot and optimize existing control systems to improve efficiency, reliability and safety
  • Participate in project estimation, proposal preparation and business development activities
  • Prepare and evaluate RFQs to vendors
  • Coordinate vendor quotes and manage vendor relationships
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations and company policies
  • Travel to customer sites for equipment start-up, drive setup, PLC code checkout and system commissioning
  • Travel is estimated at less than 25 percent but may increase based on customer demand

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field required
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in electrical controls engineering and manufacturing automation required
  • Strong proficiency in PLC programming required
  • Strong proficiency in servo drive programming required
  • HMI development experience required
  • Allen-Bradley experience required
  • Experience with motion control required
  • Experience with safety programming required
  • Experience developing highly automated systems required
  • Robotics experience preferred
  • Expertise in control panel design required
  • Experience with wiring diagrams required
  • Experience with pneumatic and hydraulic systems required
  • Familiarity with industry standards including NEC, UL508A and NFPA required
  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking and project management skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience with customer and vendor management
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks Electrical preferred
  • Ability to travel domestically as needed
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States
