Job description

Technical Sales Engineer
Department: Aeris
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Hayward, CA
Compensation: $120,000 - $140,000 / year
Description
About Aeris Technologies
Aeris Technologies is a leading manufacturer of laser gas analyzers serving critical applications in environmental monitoring, industrial process control, and emissions measurement. As part of the Project Canary family since 2022, we combine innovative optical sensing technology with precision manufacturing to deliver industry-leading analytical instruments. We're currently executing a comprehensive transformation to strengthen our operational foundation and accelerate growth.
The Opportunity
Aeris is seeking a driven, technically credible Technical Sales Engineer to own direct sales across North and South America. This is a quota-carrying role with a highly competitive commission structure designed to reward top performance. You will be the primary commercial contact for customers ranging from industrial operators to environmental agencies and research institutions. The right candidate will be deeply familiar with laser-based or optical gas sensing instrumentation and will know how to translate technical capability into customer value.
This position involves frequent travel as needed to support the business. The role's home base is the Hayward, CA office, and when not traveling, the employee should expect to work on-site there regularly.
Key Responsibilities
Sales Execution
  • Own the full sales cycle from prospecting through close for direct accounts across the Americas
  • Build and manage a healthy pipeline of qualified opportunities in industrial, utility, environmental, and government segments
  • Conduct technical demonstrations and product presentations, translating instrument performance specifications into application-specific value
  • Prepare and deliver customer proposals, negotiate commercial terms, and close orders
  • Develop territory plans that prioritize high-value verticals including oil & gas, utilities, environmental monitoring agencies, and industrial gas users

Customer & Market Development
  • Identify and develop new accounts in underpenetrated regions and end-use segments across North and Latin America
  • Maintain and grow relationships with existing direct customers to drive repeat purchases and expand wallet share
  • Represent Aeris at trade shows, technical conferences, and customer site visits
  • Gather and relay market intelligence - competitive landscape, pricing dynamics, application trends - to inform product strategy
  • Support marketing efforts on a part-time basis, including contributing to campaign development, application notes, webinars, and trade show coordination

Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with engineering, applications, and customer success teams to ensure customer requirements are accurately scoped and deliverable
  • Provide structured feedback from the field to inform roadmap prioritization for new gas species, product configurations, and platform features
  • Work with finance and operations to manage order entry, lead times, and customer expectations through delivery

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
  • 5+ years of direct sales experience in analytical instrumentation, gas sensing, or environmental monitoring equipment
  • Demonstrated technical background in gas-phase chemical analysis, including laser-based methods (TDLAS, OA-ICOS, CRDS) or comparable optical/electrochemical sensing technologies - this is a hard requirement
  • Familiarity with handheld, fixed-point, and mobile/portable gas detection platforms and their respective application environments
  • Proven track record of meeting or exceeding quota in a direct sales role
  • Experience navigating complex B2B sales cycles with multiple stakeholders (procurement, engineering, EHS, operations)
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 40% within the Americas territory
  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline (chemistry, physics, engineering)

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masters or PhD in a scientific discipline (chemistry, physics, engineering)
  • Hands-on experience with Aeris, Picarro, ABB, or comparable laser gas analyzer platforms
  • Existing relationships in industrial, utilities, or environmental compliance markets

Benefits
  • Base Salary Range: $120,000-$140,000 + equity and benefits
  • On-Target Earnings: $180,000-$200,000 at 100% quota attainment
  • Upside Potential: Uncapped
  • Office Location: Hayward, California
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance with low deductibles and premiums paid by company 99% for self and 50% for dependents and/or spouse
  • 401K with company match (no vesting period)
  • Opportunity for equity ownership
  • Student loan assistance
  • Generous culture around time off, including:
    • Unlimited PTO
    • 6 days of sick time per year
    • 11 paid company holidays per year
    • up to 12 weeks of fully paid parental leave (gender neutral) including adoptions
