, a program of the Board of Regents, as a consortium is a statewide academic endeavor to focus and strengthen the effectiveness of foundational marine science needed to address the environmental and socioeconomic challenges facing Louisiana and the nation.
LUMCON has provided unparalleled opportunities in marine science and education to the research community and public alike. Anchored by a first-rate marine laboratory, the DeFelice Marine Center, LUMCON is embedded in Louisiana's dynamic wetland environment and conveniently located on a gateway to the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico. From this facility, LUMCON operates a world-class fleet of research vessels unmatched in the Gulf of Mexico. In 2023, LUMCON is expanding its programs through the opening of a maritime research and outreach facility in Houma.
LUMCON is accepting applications for a Marine Technician I, II, or III.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • An associate's or bachelor's degree in oceanography, marine science, engineering, or related discipline and/or at least 1 year of experience as a sea-going Marine Technician or similar position is required for a Marine Technician I.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in a position equivalent to a Marine Technician I is required to qualify for a Marine Technician II.
  • At least 3 years of experience as a Marine Technician II is required to qualify for a Marine Technician III.
IDEAL CANDIDATE/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Familiarity with standard oceanographic instrumentation, associated data acquisition, and software is preferred:
    • RD Instruments Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers
    • Seabird Electronic CTDs and sensor arrays
    • Shipboard computer networks
    • NOAA's Scientific Computer System (SCS)
    • Various over-the-side data acquisition packages
    • Winch monitoring systems
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited the following:
  • Provides support to vessel operations in regard to computer networks.
  • Maintains and operates shared-use equipment and ship's computers.
  • Troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs satellite-based internet services.
  • Responsible for the operation and maintenance of permanent and transitory shared-use equipment and computer facilities.
  • Acts as a system administrator for the ship's computers.
  • Troubleshoots satellite-based internet services.
  • Provides technical assistance to scientists and other personnel.
  • Willing and have the ability to spend an average of 160 days per year at sea.
  • Spend an average of 60 days on dockside maintenance work.
  • Must maintain an active TWIC card.
  • Must maintain a valid US Passport.
  • Must be flexible as the vessel's schedule can be very fluid and subject to change.
  • Operates a small Rigid-Hulled Inflatable (RIB) with outboard to complete scientists' objectives.
  • Performs normal duties onboard an ocean-going ship including:
    • Ascends and descends ladders.
    • Lifts equipment up to 50 lbs.
    • Works aloft and in confined spaces.
    • Works odd and extended hours.
  • Must provide their own reliable transportation to and from R/V Pelican's home port in Cocodrie, Louisiana.
