What is technical recruiting?

Technical recruiting is the process of finding, attracting, and hiring candidates for technology-focused positions such as software engineers, data scientists, IT specialists, and other roles that require specialized technical skills. Technical recruiters work closely with hiring managers to understand job requirements, source qualified candidates, conduct interviews, and manage the hiring process. They often use specialized tools and platforms to reach candidates with the right technical expertise, and must stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies.

How does a technical recruiter typically collaborate with engineering teams during the hiring process?

Technical Recruiters work closely with engineering managers and technical leads to understand the specific skill sets and experience required for each role. They often participate in intake meetings to clarify job requirements, and they may join calibration sessions to align on candidate evaluation criteria. Throughout the process, Technical Recruiters coordinate interviews, gather feedback from engineering staff, and help facilitate decision-making meetings. This close collaboration ensures that only candidates who meet both technical and cultural needs move forward, and it helps foster a streamlined, transparent hiring process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical recruiter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Recruiter, you need a solid understanding of technical roles and requirements, strong sourcing abilities, and typically a background in human resources or recruiting. Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (ATS), LinkedIn Recruiter, and Boolean search techniques is essential. Excellent communication, relationship-building, and negotiation skills help you connect with candidates and hiring managers effectively. These competencies are crucial for matching top technical talent with organizational needs and ensuring a smooth, efficient recruitment process.

What is the difference between Technical Recruiting vs Software Recruiting?

AspectTechnical RecruitingSoftware Recruiting
FocusRecruiting candidates for technical roles across various engineering and IT disciplinesSpecifically recruiting software developers and engineering roles in software companies
Required CredentialsKnowledge of technical skills, certifications, and industry terminologySimilar credentials, with emphasis on software development skills and programming languages

Software Recruiting is specialized in hiring software developers and engineers. While their skills and environments overlap, the key difference lies in the scope of roles targeted.

Do technical recruiters get paid well?

Technical recruiters typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, location, and the size of the company. They often receive additional compensation through bonuses and commissions, especially when successfully placing candidates in hard-to-fill roles. Overall, the role can be financially rewarding for those with strong networking and sourcing skills.

How do you become a technical recruiter?

To become a technical recruiter, you typically need a bachelor's degree in human resources, business, or a related field, along with strong communication and interpersonal skills. Gaining experience in recruiting, understanding technical roles and skills, and becoming familiar with applicant tracking systems and sourcing tools are also important steps.

What does a technical recruiting do?

Job description

Talent Connect Protocol (TCP) is a boutique technical recruiting firm partnering with VC-backed startups and privately held companies to hire exceptional software engineering and technical talent. We work with companies from pre-seed through Series C across AI, robotics, healthcare, manufacturing, energy, and enterprise software.

TCP was bootstrapped from the ground up with a simple belief: recruiting should be a true partnership, not a numbers game. Since day one, we've focused on building strong relationships, doing great work, and becoming a trusted recruiting partner to the companies we work with.

We're now looking for a Senior Technical Recruiter to join the team and help us continue scaling.

This person will take on some of TCP's most challenging and senior-level searches, working closely with our top clients to hire the engineers and technical leaders who are hardest to find. You'll work directly with founders, CTOs, and engineering leaders, own your searches from kickoff through close, and have the freedom to develop your own recruiting style.

We're a small team with a high level of autonomy, which means you'll have a meaningful impact on your clients, candidates, and how we continue to build TCP.

What You'll Do

  • Own some of TCP's most challenging searches, with a focus on senior, staff, principal, and technical leadership-level engineering talent
  • Work closely with our top clients and partner directly with founders, CTOs, and engineering leaders on critical hires for their teams
  • Own the full recruiting lifecycle from search strategy and sourcing through candidate management, offer, and close
  • Build genuine, long-term relationships with clients and candidates rather than treating recruiting as a transactional numbers game
  • Take ownership of your desk while helping shape how TCP recruits, operates, and grows

What We're Looking For

  • 3+ years of technical recruiting experience, ideally within an agency or search environment, with a strong track record of delivering on difficult technical searches
  • Strong experience recruiting senior, staff, principal, and technical leadership-level engineering talent
  • Ability to creatively identify, engage, and close highly sought-after candidates who aren't actively looking
  • Ambitious, relationship-driven, self-motivated, and confident owning relationships with high-priority clients
  • An entrepreneurial mindset and genuine interest in helping build a growing company not just filling another recruiting desk

Why TCP

  • Freedom + autonomy: We care about results, relationships, and doing great work not where you sit, how many hours you're online, or hitting arbitrary activity KPIs
  • Uncapped earning potential: Competitive base salary + tiered quarterly commission structure. The more you bill, the higher your commission rate and the more you earn
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Health + dental + vision insurance
  • Remote flexibility: Work remotely, with a preference for candidates based in Austin
  • Small-team impact: You'll have a real voice in how we build and grow TCP

Location: Remote | Austin, TX preferred

Compensation: Base Salary + Tiered Quarterly Commission (uncapped) + Health, Dental & Vision + Unlimited PTO

If you're an experienced technical recruiter who loves the relationship-building and earning potential of agency recruiting but wants more freedom, more ownership, and less of the traditional agency grind, we'd love to hear from you.
