What is a technical project manager?

A technical project manager oversees the development of a new piece of technology or computer program. Their job duties are to create a schedule for the technical team to follow, identify important goals during the project, and ensure that a project is delivered on-time. They must also maintain careful track of the team’s progress and address any issues that may crop up during the development cycle. A technical project manager often makes reports to stakeholders and other interested parties about the timetable of the project and inform them of any issues.

How do technical project managers typically balance technical leadership with project delivery responsibilities?

Technical Project Managers often face the challenge of balancing hands-on technical guidance with overseeing project timelines, budgets, and stakeholder communication. They regularly collaborate with engineering teams to assess technical risks, clarify requirements, and troubleshoot issues, while also ensuring that project milestones are met and resources are allocated efficiently. Success in this role requires strong organizational skills, the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, and adaptability to shifting priorities. Many Technical Project Managers work in cross-functional teams, acting as a bridge between technical staff and business leaders to keep everyone aligned toward project goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical project manager?

To thrive as a Technical Project Manager, you need a solid grounding in project management methodologies, technical expertise relevant to the industry, and typically a bachelor's degree in a related field. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Trello, Microsoft Project, and certifications such as PMP or Agile/Scrum credentials are highly valuable. Strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and excellent communication skills distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are crucial for effectively leading projects to successful completion, aligning technical teams, and managing stakeholder expectations.

About This Opportunity

Responsibilities

As a Mid‑Level Technical Project Manager, you will be part of a multidisciplinary product and engineering organization responsible for delivering digital experiences used by millions every day. You will help drive execution across the Client's global platform engineering organization—coordinating teams, timelines, and dependencies to ship high‑impact software with speed and predictability.

You will plan, coordinate, and drive delivery using Agile/Scrum practices—owning sprint planning, backlog management, roadmaps, release coordination, and risk tracking across cross‑functional teams. You will manage day‑to‑day execution in tools such as Jira, GitHub / Gitlab Self hosted, and Confluence, keeping stakeholders aligned and removing blockers so engineers stay focused.

Your work will enable real‑time digital retail experiences at global scale—supporting mobile apps, internal platforms, customer analytics, personalization engines, and AI‑enhanced workflows. You will partner closely with product, design, and engineering leaders to translate business goals into clear plans, transparent status, and dependable delivery.

Required Qualifications

  • 3–6 years managing software or technology delivery projects, including 2+ years in an Agile/Scrum environment
  • Proven track record delivering cross‑functional digital products on time, on scope, and within budget
  • Hands‑on experience running Agile ceremonies—sprint planning, daily stand‑ups, reviews, and retrospectives
  • Proficiency with project and work‑tracking tools such as Jira, Github / Gitlab Self hosted, and Confluence
  • Strong skills in roadmap planning, sprint planning, backlog management, and dependency tracking
  • Experience managing risks, issues, and action items (RAID) and escalating appropriately
  • Solid understanding of the software development lifecycle (SDLC), CI/CD, and cloud‑native delivery
  • Ability to translate between technical teams and business stakeholders with clear written and verbal communication
  • Core project management competencies, including:
  • Scope, schedule, and release planning
  • Stakeholder alignment and status reporting
  • Resource coordination across teams
  • Meeting facilitation and decision tracking
  • Experience coordinating work across distributed, globally dispersed teams
  • Comfort operating in a fast‑paced, high‑change environment

AI / GenAI (Highly Preferred)

  • Experience delivering AI or GenAI‑powered features into production systems
  • Familiarity with the delivery lifecycle for machine‑learning and GenAI initiatives (data, evaluation, and iteration)
  • Experience coordinating teams building with LLMs, embeddings, or personalization workflows
  • Understanding of responsible‑AI, evaluation, and rollout considerations
  • Exposure to AI based initiatives, such as:
  • Chat and virtual‑assistant experiences
  • Search and personalization
  • Workflow automation and agent‑based patterns
  • Experience partnering with data science or ML engineering teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • PMP, CSM, PMI‑ACP, or SAFe certification
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum programs at scale (e.g., SAFe or multi‑team delivery)
  • Experience with retail, e‑commerce, or high‑transaction environments
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS and GCP and modern engineering practices
  • Background or hands‑on experience in software engineering or a related technical discipline
  • Experience with program‑level coordination across multiple teams
  • Knowledge of budgeting, vendor, and resource management
