What is a technical program manager?

A technical program manager oversees a company’s technical projects, such as implementing new network systems or developing new products. Job duties include supervising development teams, assessing work schedules, assessing productivity, and addressing any quality assurance issues that arise during production. Technical program managers are often responsible for creating reports to upper management based on the functions of the products and making suggestions on how to streamline future projects. They may also help the organization develop new strategies related to production and sales goals.

While Technical Program Managers coordinate and oversee projects across teams, Software Engineers focus on building and coding software solutions. Both roles require technical understanding, but their core responsibilities differ significantly.

How do technical program managers typically collaborate with engineering and product teams to ensure project success?

Technical Program Managers (TPMs) play a central role in facilitating communication and alignment between engineering, product, and other cross-functional teams. They work closely with product managers to define project requirements and prioritize deliverables, while coordinating with engineering to develop realistic timelines and resolve technical challenges. TPMs often lead regular meetings, track progress, and proactively address risks to keep everyone on the same page. Building strong relationships and fostering a culture of open dialogue are essential for TPMs to ensure projects stay on track and meet business goals.

Job description

What you'll do

As Senior Technical Project Manager at Giga, you will own a major data center project or a cluster of related projects  end-to-end, from site feasibility through construction close-out and energization. You operate with a high degree of autonomy, reporting to the Technical Program Manager while functioning as the de facto project lead for everyone else: engineers, A&E consultants, GC, subcontractors, AHJs, and utilities. You set the schedule, you manage the vendors, you drive permitting, and you own the handoff to construction. You're also expected to help build the function developing playbooks, mentoring Technical Project Managers, and identifying gaps in how Giga runs projects before those gaps become problems.

Where you'll work

We are an in-office culture, velocity matters when you're building physical infrastructure, and the best decisions happen in the room. This role is based at GigaEnergy HQ with regular travel to active construction sites across the US.

That said, we will make exceptions for truly exceptional talent. If you're the right person for this role, we'll have a conversation about what works.

Responsibilities

Project Ownership

  • Own the integrated project schedule from Site Feasibility through IFC and construction close-out  fully logic-tied, resource-loaded, and updated weekly in Primavera P6 or MS Project.
  • Lead all design coordination across Mechanical, Electrical, Structural, Architectural, and specialty disciplines  run the weekly coordination cadence and hold discipline leads accountable to milestone commitments.
  • Manage Plan of Record governance for your projects  ensure site adaptations are on the correct version of Giga's standard design products and that all deviations are formally controlled.
  • Own the RFI and Submittal process through construction; maintain design intent from IFC through energization.

Vendor & A&E Management

  • Write and own Scopes of Work (SOW) for external A&E firms; manage the RFP and selection process for site-specific partners.
  • Hold consultants accountable to budget, schedule, BIM standards, and deliverable quality. Manage change orders and escalate performance issues.
  • Build and maintain A&E vendor playbooks and onboarding templates that can be reused across projects.

Permitting & Regulatory

  • Drive the full entitlement and permitting lifecycle - zoning, building permits, and utility interconnects. Own the relationship with AHJs, planning departments, and utility providers across all active jurisdictions.
  • Anticipate regulatory risk; develop permitting strategies that keep the project schedule intact.

Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Partner with Sales during the pre-deal phase - produce rapid test fits and feasibility schedules that support hyperscale customer commitments.
  • Serve as the primary interface between Engineering, Construction, and the Technical Program Manager - ensure program-level reporting reflects project reality.
  • Identify risks, interdependencies, and blockers ahead of time and own the mitigation plans.
  • Mentor and support Project Managers within the program; review their deliverables and help them grow.

Program Development

  • Own the template program structure for your project type; build the playbooks and governance systems that let the team scale without adding overhead.
  • Establish and run milestone gates, design review cadences, change control, and decision logs across your projects.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, or Construction Management.
  • 5-8 years of project management experience in data centers, high-tech manufacturing, or industrial construction with a track record of owning projects from design through construction close-out.
  • You speak the language  able to read and interpret P&IDs, one-lines, architectural floor plans, and structural drawings without assistance.
  • Proficiency in Primavera P6 or MS Project, Bluebeam Revu, Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC / Build), and Procore or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience managing external A&E consultants: SOW writing, RFP management, change order control, and deliverable quality enforcement.
  • Strong understanding of the entitlement and permitting lifecycle  zoning, building permits, and utility interconnects.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and drive decisions across groups you don't directly manage.
Bonus points
  • PMP (Project Management Professional) certification.
  • Experience managing Design-Build delivery methods.
  • Previous experience on the owner's side (Owner's Representative).
  • Familiarity with GigaEnergy's modular component architecture
  • Exposure to AHJ permitting environments and utility coordination timelines.
Benefits
  • Subsidized health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Equity (options) in a rapidly growing startup
  • 401(k) with 4% employer match
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Parental leave
  • Healthcare and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA)
  • Commuter benefits
  • Monthly team onsites where all offices come in-person to collaborate
