What does a technical program manager in cybersecurity do?

A Technical Program Manager (TPM) in Cybersecurity oversees the planning, execution, and delivery of security-related projects and initiatives within an organization. They coordinate cross-functional teams, manage project timelines, and ensure that cybersecurity programs align with business objectives and compliance requirements. TPMs also communicate risks, track progress, and implement best practices to safeguard the organization's digital assets. Their role bridges technical expertise and project management to drive successful security outcomes.

How do technical program managers in cybersecurity typically coordinate cross-functional teams to drive security initiatives?

Technical Program Managers in Cybersecurity frequently act as the bridge between engineering, security operations, compliance, and executive leadership teams. They facilitate clear communication of project goals, timelines, and security requirements, often leading regular meetings and status updates. TPMs also ensure alignment across departments by translating technical security needs into actionable tasks for diverse stakeholders, managing dependencies, and proactively addressing roadblocks. This collaborative approach helps drive the successful implementation of cybersecurity programs and fosters a culture of shared responsibility for security.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical program manager in cybersecurity, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Program Manager in Cybersecurity, you need a strong background in cybersecurity principles, program management, and risk assessment, often supported by a bachelor’s degree in a related field and certifications like PMP or CISSP. Familiarity with security frameworks, project management tools (e.g., Jira, MS Project), and incident response systems is typically expected. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help drive cross-functional teams and manage complex security initiatives. These skills are crucial for effectively leading cybersecurity programs that protect organizations from evolving threats and ensure compliance.

Job description

The Company:

A prominent fortune 500 financial services firm with a nationwide network of independent financial advisors. This company offers an extensive selection of investment products and services to individuals, businesses, and institutions, with a strong emphasis on utilizing innovation and technology to cultivate client relationships.
What You Will Be Doing:

We are seeking a Technical Program Manager to lead and support key cybersecurity initiatives that protect advisor systems, client data, and digital access across our organization. This role focuses on improving secure login experiences, strengthening system protections, and driving large-scale security program rollouts.
The Technical Program Manager will partner with engineering teams, vendors, infrastructure groups, and business stakeholders to deliver security solutions that enhance how advisors access and use critical platforms.
Responsibilities:

  • Lead cybersecurity programs focused on secure system access and identity protection.
  • Manage initiatives that improve multi-factor authentication (MFA) and secure session management for advisor platforms.
  • Support enhancements to advisor email security and authentication processes.
  • Help coordinate the rollout of new security tools, including secure browser technology for advisor-facing systems.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams and external vendors to plan, track, and deliver program milestones.
  • Drive communication, implementation planning, and adoption of new security capabilities.
  • Manage complex technical programs from planning through implementation.
  • Coordinate across product, engineering, infrastructure, and security teams.
  • Track program timelines, risks, and deliverables.
  • Support large-scale rollouts, communications, and user adoption efforts.
  • Help strengthen the organization’s overall cybersecurity posture.
What We’re Looking For:
  • Experience managing technical or cybersecurity-related programs.
  • Strong organizational and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and vendor partnerships.
  • Experience working with identity management, authentication, or enterprise technology programs is a plus.
Ideal Candidate Profile:
  • We’re looking for candidates with strong program leadership in cybersecurity and technology initiatives, particularly in financial services. Key qualifications include:
  • Proven experience leading major technology rollouts and enterprise programs.
  • Background in cybersecurity and familiarity with identity/access management (IAM) platforms such as Azure AD, SailPoint, Ping Identity, or Okta.
  • Experience in the financial services industry is highly valued.
  • Expertise in Agile and SAFe methodologies, including hands-on use of Jira/Atlassian tools.
  • 5+ years in Agile or program management, with flexibility for exceptionally strong candidates demonstrating leadership capability.
  • Experience managing advisor-facing or end-user security initiatives, especially MFA, session management, or email security projects.
  • Not a standard Scrum Master role—this position requires higher-level program leadership, driving complex initiatives across multiple teams and vendors.
