What does a technical design intern do?

A Technical Design Intern supports the design and production process by assisting in garment fitting, creating technical drawings, and updating tech packs. They work closely with designers and production teams to ensure accuracy in measurements, construction details, and fabric specifications. This role often involves using software like Adobe Illustrator and Excel to document design revisions. Interns gain hands-on experience in the development pipeline, learning how technical design ensures the final product meets quality and fit standards.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect as a technical design intern?

As a Technical Design Intern, you'll typically assist with creating and revising technical drawings, developing prototypes, and supporting design documentation under the guidance of senior engineers or designers. You may also participate in team meetings to provide input, conduct research, and help resolve design challenges. The role often involves a mix of independent work and collaboration with engineers and other interns. This hands-on experience is valuable for building your technical portfolio and gaining real-world insights into the design process within your industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical design intern?

To thrive as a Technical Design Intern, a solid understanding of engineering principles, proficiency in CAD software, and enrollment in a related STEM degree are typically required. Familiarity with tools like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Adobe Creative Suite is highly valued, and knowledge of industry standards or certifications in design software can be beneficial. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams distinguish standout candidates. These skills are crucial for creating accurate technical drawings, supporting project goals, and seamlessly contributing to design teams.

How we’re different

Etched believes in the Bitter Lesson. We are the first inference-focused frontier AI system. Our addressable market is the entirety of inference, unlike many of our competitors.

We are a fully in-person team in San Jose (Santana Row), and greatly value engineering skills. We do not have boundaries between engineering and research, and we expect all of our technical staff to contribute to both and work across disciplines as needed.
