How much do astrodynamics engineer jobs pay per year?
What are some typical projects or responsibilities for an astrodynamics engineer?
Astrodynamics Engineers are often tasked with calculating and optimizing spacecraft trajectories, predicting orbital maneuvers, and supporting mission planning for satellites and space probes. You may also analyze mission data, model the effects of various gravitational forces, and develop software tools for simulation and analysis. Collaborative work with mission designers, spacecraft engineers, and operations teams is common to ensure mission objectives are met. The role can include both hands-on technical tasks and participation in interdisciplinary project meetings, offering opportunities to see your work directly impact real-world space missions.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the astrodynamics engineer position, and why are they important?
To thrive as an Astrodynamics Engineer, you need strong analytical skills, a solid foundation in physics and mathematics, and typically a degree in aerospace engineering or a related field. Experience with orbital mechanics simulation software, MATLAB, STK (Systems Tool Kit), or similar specialized tools is highly valued, and some positions may require security clearance or relevant certifications. Effective problem-solving, teamwork, and strong communication abilities are important soft skills for collaborating on complex projects. These competencies ensure precision in trajectory design, mission planning, and contribute to the overall success of aerospace missions.
What does an astrodynamics engineer do?
An Astrodynamics Engineer designs, analyzes, and optimizes the trajectories of spacecraft, satellites, and other space vehicles. They use mathematical models, physics, and computational simulations to plan orbital maneuvers, ensure mission feasibility, and minimize fuel consumption. Their work is crucial for space missions, including satellite deployment, interplanetary exploration, and station-keeping operations.

Job description
Company:
The Boeing CompanyBoeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) is seeking an Astrodynamicist to join our Astrodynamics Team located in El Segundo, CA. This early-career position offers the opportunity to work within a highly collaborative team environment as part of the Astrodynamics group under the Mission Systems Engineering & Operations department in Space Mission Systems. Designed as a non-senior role, it requires flexibility to learn and operate beyond traditional definitions of astrodynamics, encompassing a broader range of orbital analysis and mission systems engineering responsibilities.
Position Responsibilities:
The team are the Rocket Scientists in the Mission Control Center, responsible for flying satellites with a primary focus on orbit mechanics, mission analysis and operations, though the role extends beyond the traditional non-Boeing definition of Astrodynamics.
Located in El Segundo, this group is a recognized'center of excellence,' built on decades of accumulated knowledge and historical learnings fostering continuous improvement and collaboration across multiple programs.
As part of a highly motivated team, members perform astrodynamics analyses including transfer orbit design, propellant budgeting, mission planning, and station keeping design and analysis.
Interact closely with customers, launch vehicle providers, subsystem leads, and program management supporting trade studies and new business across all orbit regimes (GEO, LEO, MEO, cis-lunar).
The environment encompasses concept design, proposal phases through to on-orbit mission operations-participating actively in mission activities from launch, transfer orbits, to in-orbit support.
Spacecraft systems engineering responsibilities include defining and flowing requirements between subsystems and astrodynamics to support mission design, as well as designing mission-specific analysis and operational tools.
Identify software requirements and support implementation of specialized astrodynamics software tools.
This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at the listed location.
