Job description

This is a full-time 40 hour a week position, day shift.
THE POSITION:
The Specialty Services Float- Assistant or Technician is responsible for working collaboratively within the Department of Clinical Services and with the other services throughout the organization. This person will work primarily alongside internal medicine, general medicine and other specialty services in assisting with the following tasks described below. These services include providing veterinary support in the examination room with outpatient and inpatient visits, assisting with the initial case management of animals admitted to the hospital and completing scheduled tech appointments.
This person must be able to interact with all staff members and clients in a positive and dynamic manner and provide technical advice following hospital policies and procedures. The position requires knowledge of their general veterinary specialty's clinical tests, procedures, protocols, medical terminology, animal handling and math skills. The assistant should be able to communicate, orally and in writing, veterinary specific clinical information regarding services for our clients and other hospital staff. The position will be involved in the continuous training of other new staff.
Some of the duties include:
  • Developing proficiency at phlebotomy, urinary catheterization, blood pressure measurement, timed tests including dosing math, intravenous catheter placement, and Point of Care tests.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in delivering assigned treatments with accuracy and efficiency. These may include administering subcutaneous fluids or injections, medical dosing of injectable medications, among other treatments as directed by veterinarians.
  • Is able to perform suture and staple removals and is able to recognize problems or complications with incisions.
  • Assist veterinarian to obtain complete history, vaccine status and vital pre-appointment paperwork
  • Prepare vaccines if required
  • Submit prescriptions accurately as directed by doctor
  • Provide exceptional client service based on the individual needs of each client and patient.
  • Communicate in a professional, friendly and effective manner with all internal and external customers
  • Demonstrated proficiency at performing laboratory testing including Point of Care tests such as Alpha TRAK glucose, NOVA laboratory work, hematocrit including both PCV and TP values, and urine dipstick chemistries.
  • Ability to record all owner's medications accurately in the electronic medical record

COMPENSATION:
Veterinary Assistants starting $22-$27/hour
Certified Veterinary Technicians starting $25-$30/hr, $5000 Sign on Bonus for CVTs!
Please note that candidates with additional experience or credentials may be eligible for compensation aligned with their qualifications
APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS:
We are looking for applicants with at least one year of experience working as a veterinary technician/assistant. As this position requires excellent verbal and written communication skills, we require applicants to include a cover letter showcasing your writing skills. In order to be hired as a veterinary technician one must be a certified veterinary technician.
