Technical Art information

What is technical art?

Technical art is a discipline within the video game and digital media industries that bridges the gap between artists and programmers. Technical artists are responsible for developing tools, optimizing workflows, and ensuring that art assets are efficiently integrated into game engines. They often work on creating shaders, managing asset pipelines, and solving technical challenges that arise during production. This role requires a blend of artistic understanding and technical skills, including familiarity with scripting languages and 3D software. Technical artists play a crucial part in bringing artistic visions to life while maintaining performance and feasibility across platforms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical artist?

To thrive as a Technical Artist, you need a strong background in 3D art and computer graphics, combined with a solid understanding of programming or scripting languages such as Python or MEL. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like Maya, Unreal Engine, Unity, and shader development is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, communication, and the ability to collaborate with both artists and engineers help set outstanding Technical Artists apart. These skills bridge the gap between artistic vision and technical implementation, ensuring efficient workflows and visually compelling results in game or film production.

What are some common challenges faced by technical artists when bridging the gap between artists and programmers in game development?

Technical Artists often act as a crucial link between creative and technical teams, which can present challenges such as translating artistic vision into technical specifications and ensuring assets perform efficiently in the game engine. They regularly troubleshoot compatibility issues, optimize workflows, and develop tools to streamline asset integration. Effective communication and adaptability are key, as Technical Artists must anticipate and resolve conflicts that arise from differing priorities between art and programming teams. This role offers a dynamic work environment and valuable opportunities to develop both creative and technical skill sets.

What is the difference between Technical Art vs 3D Artist?

Work EnvironmentCollaborates with artists and programmers in game/animation studiosPrimarily creates visual assets for games, films, or animations
Common CertificationsTechnical certifications in programming, software tools, or game enginesArt degrees, 3D modeling certifications

Technical Artists focus on bridging art and technology, optimizing assets, and developing tools, while 3D Artists concentrate on creating visual content. Both roles often work together in game and animation industries, but their skill sets and responsibilities differ significantly.

Do technical artists make good money?

Technical artists typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, location, and industry. They often have skills in programming, shader development, and 3D software, which can contribute to higher compensation levels in the gaming, film, or animation industries.

How to get a job as a technical artist?

To become a technical artist, develop strong skills in 3D modeling, scripting, and shading, and gain experience with tools like Maya, Blender, or Unreal Engine. Building a portfolio that demonstrates your ability to solve technical challenges and understanding the art pipeline is essential, along with relevant education or certifications in computer graphics or related fields.

What does a technical artist do?

A technical artist bridges the gap between art and programming in game development or animation, ensuring art assets are optimized for performance and integrated correctly into the engine. They often work with tools like Maya, Blender, or Unreal Engine and possess skills in scripting, shader creation, and troubleshooting technical issues related to art pipelines.

Job description

WHAT MAKES US EPIC?
At the core of Epic's success are talented, passionate people. Epic prides itself on creating a collaborative, welcoming, and creative environment. Whether it's building award-winning games or crafting engine technology that enables others to make visually stunning interactive experiences, we're always innovating.
Being Epic means being a part of a team that continually strives to do right by our community and users. We're constantly innovating to raise the bar of engine and game development.
ART
What We Do
Push your artistic talent to the limit on a team of world-class environment, character and concept artists who strive to innovate and inspire.
TECH ART INTERN
What You'll Do
We are looking for a Technical Art Intern to join the Rocket League team. You will sit between our artists and engineers: building tools that speed up how content gets into the build, authoring real-time materials, and profiling scenes so the game holds frame rate everywhere from mobile to high-refresh PC. You will have an impact on real work that ships into playable builds.
In this role, you will
  • Build small pipeline tools and scripts (Python, UEFN/Verse, DCC scripting APIs) that automate repetitive steps for arena, vehicle, and cosmetics artists
  • Profile arenas and assets in engine, then help fix what you find: draw calls, overdraw, texture memory, LODs, and vertex budgets
  • Author and iterate on real-time materials and shaders for signature Rocket League surfaces
  • Take assets from Maya, Blender, or Substance through to an optimized, working setup in engine and validate them in a playable build
  • Work directly with technical artists, rendering engineers, and environment artists to unblock issues and document what you learn
  • Show your work in art reviews and playtests, take feedback, and iterate quickly
What we're looking for
  • Currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from, a Technical Art, Computer Science, Digital Media, or Game Development program, or a portfolio strong enough to stand in for one
  • Scripting experience in Python, C#, or a DCC scripting API. Bonus if you have written something that saved someone else time
  • Hands-on with at least one 3D package (Maya, 3ds Max, or Blender) and the Substance suite
  • Working knowledge of Unreal Engine
  • Solid real-time rendering fundamentals: how lighting, shading, UV layout, texture memory, and poly budgets affect performance
  • Genuine curiosity about performance. You like finding out why a frame is slow
  • Clear, proactive communication. You raise blockers early instead of quietly grinding on them
  • A portfolio or reel showing technical art work: tools, shaders, procedural systems, or optimization case studies
  • Nice to have: profiling tools (Unreal Insights, RenderDoc, PIX), HLSL, Houdini, or experience shipping to mobile or console

This internship has a flexible start date in 2027. Recruitment will be ongoing until teams find an ideal match. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the posting location for the duration of the internship. For more information about Epic's Early Career Program, visit epicgames.com/earlycareers.
