What is technical accounting?

Technical accounting refers to the specialized area of accounting that deals with complex, often non-routine transactions and the interpretation and application of accounting standards such as GAAP or IFRS. Professionals in technical accounting roles analyze new accounting pronouncements, assist with implementing new standards, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. They are often called upon to provide guidance on intricate accounting issues like revenue recognition, lease accounting, and business combinations. Technical accountants also help organizations maintain accurate financial reporting and stay up-to-date with evolving accounting rules.

What are some common challenges faced in a technical accounting role and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Technical Accounting often encounter complex and evolving accounting standards, such as ASC 606 or IFRS 16, which require thorough interpretation and application. Navigating these standards can be challenging, especially when dealing with unique or non-routine transactions. Staying current through continuous learning and collaborating closely with cross-functional teams—such as finance, legal, and external auditors—can help ensure accurate reporting and compliance. Additionally, strong documentation and communication skills are essential to clearly explain technical concepts to stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Accountant, you need deep expertise in accounting principles, financial reporting standards (such as US GAAP or IFRS), and typically a CPA or similar certification. Familiarity with ERP systems like SAP or Oracle, advanced Excel skills, and experience interpreting complex accounting guidance are essential. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help you translate technical standards into actionable business insights. These skills ensure accurate financial compliance, effective problem-solving, and clear guidance for organizational decision-making.

  • Partner with internal stakeholders to gather supporting documentation and develop well-supported accounting conclusions.
  • Support acquisition accounting and purchase accounting analyses for newly acquired practices.
  • Assist with valuation-related accounting considerations and business combination assessments.
  • Participate in integration-related accounting and reporting activities for newly acquired entities.
  • Support a high-volume acquisition environment in which the organization completes dozens of acquisitions annually.
  • Partner closely with Legal, FP&A, Treasury, Operational Accounting, and executive leadership teams to align accounting treatment with business objectives and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with external auditors to support audit requests, technical accounting positions, and financial statement reviews.
  • Assist with the development, documentation, and maintenance of accounting policies.

Essential Skills

  • Active CPA certification.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
  • Big 4 public accounting experience or equivalent top-tier public accounting background.
  • Strong experience researching and documenting technical accounting issues.
  • Deep understanding of U.S. GAAP and its application to complex transactions.
  • Proven experience preparing technical accounting memoranda and supporting analyses.
  • Hands-on experience with ASC 842 Lease Accounting and ASC 606 Revenue Recognition.
  • Experience supporting audited financial statements and annual audit processes.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to effectively interact and communicate with external auditors and executive leadership.
  • Ability to work in a hybrid environment and be physically present in the Washington, DC / Northern Virginia area as required.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Manager-level experience in public accounting or industry.
  • Experience with business combinations and acquisition accounting, including purchase accounting.
  • Experience supporting private-equity-backed organizations.
  • Exposure to healthcare, retail, consumer services, or multi-location business environments.
  • Experience working with Oracle ERP systems.
  • Experience partnering with Legal on regulatory or compliance-related accounting matters.
  • Interest in working in a high-growth environment with significant career development opportunities.
