Tech Manager information

What is a tech manager?

Tech Managers, also known as Technical Managers, are professionals who oversee technical teams and projects within an organization. They are responsible for planning, coordinating, and leading technology-related activities, ensuring that projects are completed on time and meet organizational standards. Tech Managers bridge the gap between technical staff and upper management by translating business needs into technical solutions. They also mentor team members, manage resources, and help set strategic direction for technology initiatives.

How do tech managers typically balance hands-on technical work with people management responsibilities?

Tech Managers often face the challenge of balancing their technical expertise with the demands of leading a team. In most organizations, they spend a portion of their time on code reviews, architectural decisions, and technical problem-solving, while also dedicating significant energy to mentoring, conducting one-on-ones, and facilitating team collaboration. The exact split can vary depending on company size and project phase, but successful Tech Managers prioritize clear communication and delegation to ensure both technical goals and team development are met. This role offers opportunities to influence both technology direction and team culture.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tech manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tech Manager, you need a solid background in software development or IT, leadership experience, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Trello), cloud platforms, and sometimes certifications such as PMP or AWS Certified Solutions Architect are valuable. Strong communication, problem-solving, and team-building skills set outstanding Tech Managers apart. These competencies are crucial for effectively leading technical teams, ensuring successful project delivery, and aligning technology initiatives with business goals.

What is the difference between Tech Manager vs Software Engineer?

AspectTech Manager
Primary RoleOversees technical teams, manages projects, and aligns technology with business goals
Required SkillsLeadership, project management, technical expertise, communication
Work EnvironmentManagement meetings, strategic planning, team coordination
Common CertificationsPMP, Scrum Master, ITIL, technical certifications

While a Tech Manager focuses on leading teams and strategic planning, a Software Engineer primarily develops and maintains software. Both roles require technical skills, but the Tech Manager emphasizes leadership and project oversight, whereas the Software Engineer concentrates on coding and technical problem-solving.

What does a tech manager do?

A tech manager oversees technology teams and projects, ensuring the development and implementation of technical solutions align with organizational goals. They coordinate between departments, manage budgets, and often have technical expertise in areas like software development, network infrastructure, or cybersecurity. Strong leadership, communication skills, and familiarity with project management tools are essential for success in this role.

What is the salary of a tech manager?

The salary of a tech manager typically ranges from $90,000 to $150,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and company size. Senior tech managers with specialized skills or certifications can earn higher compensation, often including bonuses and stock options.

IT Manager

Jetson Home

North Vancouver, BC

Full-time

Re-posted 18 days ago

Job description

About Jetson

Jetson is on a mission to accelerate the transition of 100 million homes across North America away from fossil fuels toward sustainable energy use. We believe in a future that is 100% electric and 100% better.

Homes are one of the largest sources of carbon emissions, yet adoption of solutions like heat pumps remains slow due to cost and complexity. Jetson is solving this by building the first fully vertically integrated home electrification company — making clean energy simple, transparent, and affordable.

We rely heavily on technology, automation, and data to scale this impact. At Jetson, we value people who are excellent at their craft, curious about new tools (including AI), and motivated to continuously improve how work gets done.

Who You Are
  • A builder of functions, not just a keeper of them. You'd be our first IT hire, walking into a team of 200+ people across 10+ sites in two countries with no IT team to inherit from. That excites you rather than scares you. You're comfortable defining the work as much as doing it, and you make good decisions with incomplete information.
  • A true generalist, equally at home in a wiring closet and an admin console. You can plan a network drop and a cable run in a new warehouse in the morning, debug a SAML provisioning flow in the afternoon, and help someone recover a locked laptop before end of day. You like that the abstractions are thin and the consequences of your decisions are tangible.
  • Genuinely service-minded. You get satisfaction from unblocking people. You explain things without condescension, you follow up, and you'd rather build the system that prevents the ticket than close the same ticket twice.
  • Curious and constantly learning. The tools change fast, and you stay on top of what actually matters — including how AI can take the toil out of IT work — without chasing every shiny object.
What You'll Do
  • Own identity and systems integration. Stand up and maintain the connective tissue between our internal systems: Google Workspace, HiBob, GreenHouse, Hubspot, and a long tail of vertical SaaS tools that authenticate and provision over OIDC and SAML. You'll own joiner/mover/leaver flows so access is correct, timely, and revoked the moment it should be.
  • Manage the device fleet end to end. Our people run on Windows, Mac, and Chromebook laptops, and our field crews on Android phones. You'll manage the full lifecycle (procurement through retirement) through JumpCloud MDM and Apple Business Manager, and keep enrollment, configuration, and compliance in good shape.
  • Keep us secure. Put sensible, proportionate security measures in place and keep them running: endpoint protection, least-privilege access, and the everyday hygiene that protects a fast-growing company without getting in its way.
  • Build and run our networks. Design and operate cross-site networking, VPN, and remote access so our locations and people connect reliably and securely, wherever they are.
  • Stand up new sites, hands-on. Partner with our expansion team to bring new warehouse locations online from planning through execution: floorplans for AV, network, and security; spec'ing and purchasing equipment; and selecting and managing the partners who run cabling and handle installation. This work involves occasional travel to sites across the US (and possibly Canada).
  • Support the team and standardize the rest. Be the person people turn to when something breaks, and turn the recurring stuff into playbooks and standard equipment lists — new-hire setups, new-site builds, and other repeated operations — so the right gear and access show up reliably and you scale your own time. You'll also own ordering hardware and software licenses for the company.
How You Will Grow
  • Build the IT function from the ground up. This is a greenfield role. You'll set the standards, choose the tools, and write the playbooks. Your fingerprints will be on how Jetson does IT for years to come.
  • Grow into leading it. You're the first hire, not the only one we'll ever make. As the company scales across more sites and people, you'll have the opportunity to grow the function and the team around you.
  • Develop rare breadth. Few IT roles span physical infrastructure, cloud identity, endpoint management, networking, and security across a multi-site, cross-border, fast-growing company. You'll gain context and range that's hard to find anywhere else.

Job Type: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: We are open to considering candidates at several levels. Our compensation is structured to meet or exceed the market standard.

Benefits:

  • Dental Care, Vision Care & Life Insurance premiums fully paid by Jetson
  • Extended Health Care
  • Disability Insurance
  • Education Support
  • Parental Leave Top Up

Work Location: In person - North Vancouver, BC

Do you feel like you don't have everything that's listed above but can still do the job? If you have the core skills and experience that we're looking for and are willing to use your talent to learn the rest, we encourage you to apply!
