Job Summary

Summary
The Pharmacy Intern supports the mission of the Pharmacy Department by ensuring that the right patient receives the right medication in a safe and timely manner under the direct supervision of a Pharmacist. Develops a full understanding of the drug distribution system and demonstrates competency in carrying out all duties associated with delivering medications to the patient care areas. Uses related computer software, gains experience in the interpretation, verification, order entry, compounding, and dispensing of pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical supplies. The Pharmacy Intern may also be involved in disseminating drug information. All applicants must be currently pursuing a Pharmacist degree.

Essential Functions
Supports the mission of the Pharmacy Department by ensuring that the right patient receives the right medication in a safe and timely manner under the direct supervision of a Pharmacist.
Develops a full understanding of the drug distribution system and demonstrates competency in carrying out all duties associated with delivering medications to the patient care areas.
Uses related computer software and gains experience in the interpretation, verification, order entry, compounding, and dispensing of pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical supplies.
May also be involved in the dissemination of drug information.
Works collaboratively with the treatment team to maximize individual patient outcomes.
Counsels patients on prescription and over-the-counter medications and devices.
Monitors medication therapies by performing profile reviews, interpreting laboratory values, and ensuring drug regimens are consistent with medication use guidelines and protocols.
Assists the Pharmacist in gathering information to advise nurses, doctors, and patients on the proper and safe use of medications.
Fills and delivers medications requested by nursing units and, as needed, for automatic dispensing cabinets, after a complete check by a Pharmacist.
Adheres to HIPAA regulations regarding confidentiality and patient privacy.
