Tech Contract information

What is a tech contract?

A tech contract is a legally binding agreement that outlines the terms and conditions for technology-related services, products, or collaborations. These contracts are commonly used between businesses and technology vendors, consultants, or freelancers to specify deliverables, timelines, payment terms, intellectual property rights, confidentiality, and dispute resolution. Tech contracts help ensure that both parties understand their obligations and protect their interests throughout the duration of the business relationship.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working on tech contracts, and how can they be managed?

Professionals in tech contract roles often encounter challenges such as rapidly changing project requirements, tight deadlines, and the need to quickly adapt to new technologies or team environments. Managing these challenges involves maintaining clear communication with stakeholders, setting realistic expectations, and staying organized with detailed documentation. Building strong relationships with both clients and in-house teams can also help ensure smooth collaboration and project success. Being proactive about upskilling and staying current with industry trends is essential for consistently meeting project demands.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tech contract manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tech Contract Manager, you need strong knowledge of contract law, negotiation, and procurement processes, typically backed by a degree in business, law, or a related field. Familiarity with contract management software (such as SAP Ariba or Coupa) and certifications like Certified Commercial Contracts Manager (CCCM) are common technical requirements. Excellent attention to detail, strong communication, and analytical problem-solving abilities distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure that technology contracts are efficiently negotiated, compliant, and aligned with organizational goals, reducing risk and maximizing value.

Job description

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

With a track record of global leadership in bone marrow transplantation, HIV/AIDS prevention, immunotherapy and COVID-19 vaccines, Fred Hutch has earned a reputation as one of the world’s leading cancer, infectious disease and biomedical research centers. Fred Hutch operates eight clinical care sites that provide medical oncology, infusion, radiation, proton therapy and related services, and network affiliations with hospitals in five states. Together, our fully integrated research and clinical care teams seek to discover new cures to the world’s deadliest diseases and make life beyond cancer a reality.

At Fred Hutch we value collaboration, compassion, determination, excellence, innovation, integrity and respect. Our mission is directly tied to the humanity, dignity and inherent value of each employee, patient, community member and supporter. Our commitment to learning across our differences and similarities make us stronger. We seek employees who bring different and innovative ways of seeing the world and solving problems.

Most Fred Hutch jobs requiresomeon-campus work. However, there may be flexibility for certain positions. Please check with the recruiter if you are an out-of-state applicant interested only in working outside of the Seattle area.

Responsibilities

Contract Management & Analysis

  • Conduct contract reviews and analysis for renewals, identifying cost drivers, price escalations, and optimization opportunities
  • Analyze software licensing agreements including usage rights, termination clauses, and vendor lock in provisions
  • Track contract terms and renewal dates to ensure proactive management rather than reactive processing
  • Identify consolidation opportunities across vendor relationships and contracts

Renewal Pipeline Management

  • Manage the IT contract renewal pipeline end to end, including notifying business owners of upcoming renewals, maintaining data accuracy, and triggering the review process
  • Maintain proactive visibility across the full IT contract portfolio so renewals are managed ahead of expiration rather than processed reactively

  • Lead vendor negotiations and renewals, applying market pricing, competitive alternatives, and benchmarking data to drive savings and improved commercial terms
  • Manage vendor communications during contract negotiations and renewals
  • Own routine contract renewals and reviews end to end, exercising independent judgment on commercial terms and escalating only when risk, scope change, or contract value exceeds a defined threshold

Cost Optimization & Analysis

  • Perform spend analysis to identify trends, anomalies, and savings opportunities
  • Research alternative solutions and competitive pricing for existing contracts
  • Support license optimization by analyzing usage data versus contracted amounts

Strategic Procurement Support

  • Assist with RFP development and vendor evaluation processes
  • Maintain procurement databases and contract repositories
  • Generate reports on procurement metrics, savings, and vendor performance
  • Support compliance with organizational procurement policies and procedures
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in business or related field.

  • Experience with software licensing and SaaS contract models.
  • Understanding of contract terms and ability to identify problematic clauses.
  • Analytical skills for cost comparison and trend analysis.
  • Experience independently negotiating software, SaaS, and services contracts, including price and commercial terms. Demonstrated experience reading complex software, SaaS, and services contracts, identifying commercial and risk issues, and recommending negotiation strategy.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage routine renewals and contract reviews independently, owning the decision end to end.
  • Knowledge of procurement best practices and cost optimization techniques.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Procurement experience specifically in the IT software sourcing category.
  • Comfortable leading without authority and building engagement in a process environment that is still maturing.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, with the ability to tailor stakeholder communication across technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Experience partnering directly with IT directors and business owners to influence procurement decisions.
  • Familiarity with AI tools and their application to procurement and software contracts; AI related certifications a plus.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $97,822 to $146,682, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
