A teaching associate helps teach students. This classification is different from a graduate or student teaching assistant because the duties often involve more student instruction. Other common job duties include distributing learning materials, answering questions from students, and grading assignments. A teaching associate must be prepared to provide academic support and help facilitate courses.
| Aspect | Teaching Associate | Teaching Assistant |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Typically requires a master's degree or higher in education or related field | Often requires a high school diploma or bachelor's degree; some positions may prefer coursework in education |
| Work Environment | Works directly with students, often leading classes or tutoring sessions | Supports teachers by assisting with classroom management and student support |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Used in universities, colleges, and some K-12 settings | Common in K-12 schools and higher education institutions |
In summary, a Teaching Associate typically holds higher qualifications and takes on more instructional responsibilities than a Teaching Assistant. Teaching Associates often lead classes and develop curriculum, while Teaching Assistants support teachers with classroom tasks. Both roles are essential in educational settings but differ mainly in credentials and scope of duties.

Description About Emeryville Emeryville is a dynamic and compact city situated in the northwest corner of Alameda County, located between Oakland and Berkeley on the eastern shore of the San Francisco Bay. Incorporated in 1896, it has become a major economic hub, home to companies like Pixar, Peet's Coffee, and Clif Bar. With excellent freeway, Bay Bridge, and Amtrak access, it's a key transportation gateway.
Emeryville's dense urban feel, diverse community, and mix of housing options make it a popular place to live and work in the Bay Area. About the Department The Emeryville Child Development Center (ECDC) has supported children and families since 1979. We provide safe, nurturing care in a culturally diverse setting and partner with parents as their child's first teacher.
Our language-rich, play-based environment encourages exploration, growth, and joy. ECDC is a state-licensed, year-round program serving children ages twelve months to five years, and we're proud to be one of California's first city-run child development centers. DEFINITION Under direction, this position performs a variety of duties and activities that support the cognitive, social-emotional, and physical development of children; collaborates in a team-oriented environment to design and deliver creative curriculum and programs; and performs related duties as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS The Teacher is a journey-level classification in the Teacher series. Incumbents are responsible for the full range of instructional duties associated with the teaching of children enrolled in the Early Childhood Center. This is a classification in the Teacher series and can be distinguished from the Teacher Associate, which is an entry-level classification, and the Lead Teacher classification, which is the advanced journey or lead level position.
The Teacher is further distinguished from the Lead Teacher classification, in which the latter performs the most complex tasks and provides functional directions to staff while exercising independent judgment. Examples of Duties Provides care and direct supervision of children, which may include sitting, squatting, kneeling, bending, lifting, and carrying children as needed.
