FLSA STATUS: Exempt
CONTRACT: 200-day contract

Term of employment: Term of employment shall be 200 days each academic year (July 1 through June 30).
JOB DESCRIPTION
Pursuant to WV Code ยง18A-1-1:
"Classroom teacher" means a professional educator who has a direct instructional or counseling relationship with students and who spends the majority of his or her time in that capacity.
The Science Teacher is a classroom teacher responsible for providing high-quality instruction that promotes student achievement and growth in science. The teacher develops and delivers standards-based instruction aligned with the West Virginia College- and Career-Readiness Standards, creates and maintains a safe and engaging learning environment, and supports students' academic, social, emotional, and behavioral development. The teacher may be assigned to teach science courses consistent with the employee's certification and the instructional needs of Pocahontas County Schools.
The Science Teacher performs duties consistent with the expectations of a professional educator as defined by West Virginia Code, West Virginia Board of Education policy, and Pocahontas County Board of Education policy.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Valid West Virginia Professional Teaching Certificate with endorsement(s) in Science, including but not limited to General Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Space Science, or other science endorsements appropriate to the assigned teaching duties.
  • Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code ยง18A-3-10

ADDITIONAL MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Applicants who have recent unsatisfactory evaluations will not be considered eligible for consideration
  • Applicants who demonstrate unsatisfactory interview performance are not eligible for consideration
  • Applicants who receive unfavorable reference recommendations will not be eligible for consideration.
  • Applicants who have been dismissed or who have had their contracts non-renewed for cause by another school district are not eligible for consideration.

  • Designing Instruction: Develops and implements engaging, standards-based instruction that promotes critical thinking, problem-solving, student engagement, and the application of learning. Selects appropriate instructional resources, technology, and learning experiences to support student achievement.
  • Assessing Student Learning: Designs and implements formative and summative assessments aligned with learning objectives. Uses assessment data to monitor progress, provide feedback, and inform instructional decisions.
  • Understanding Students: Demonstrates knowledge of students' individual strengths, interests, learning styles, cultural backgrounds, and academic needs to provide differentiated instruction and appropriate accommodations or modifications.

  • Creating a Respectful Culture: Establishes positive relationships with students and creates a safe, respectful, and supportive learning environment conducive to academic success and scientific exploration.

  • Supporting Student Success: Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to implement accommodations, interventions, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), Section 504 plans, and other support services as appropriate.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supervising Students: Provides appropriate supervision of students during instructional and non-instructional periods, school activities, field experiences, and other assigned settings to promote student safety and well-being.
  • Contributing to Student Activities: Supports student engagement through participation in extracurricular activities, student organizations, academic competitions, and other school-sponsored programs as assigned.
  • Performing Assigned Responsibilities: Carries out other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Principal, Superintendent, or designee in support of the educational mission of Pocahontas County Schools.
