Job description
REPORTS TO: TAY Housing Manager
STATUS: Full Time/Non-Exempt
COMPENSATION: $32.32/hour including paid medical insurance as well as paid time off (vacation, health, & holidays)
SCHEDULE: Monday-Thursday: on site, Fridays: virtual, some evenings will be required
GENERAL SUMMARY: The Youth Services at the SF LGBT Center include structured group programming, crisis intervention, navigation & referral services, leadership development, a dedicated drop-in youth space, on-site individual and group mental health services (therapy/counseling/crisis management). Low-barrier services are designed to reach disconnected lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQQ) youth ages 16-24. The program is rooted in community building, culturally responsive, trauma-informed, client-centered care, and harm reduction models. A high percentage of program participants have experienced physical and/or sexual abuse, homelessness, engagement with criminal justice and/or foster care systems, substance use/abuse, and/or mental health challenges.
Role Overview: Under the direction of the Director of Youth Services and the TAY Housing Manager, the TAY Service Navigator serves transitional age youth (TAY) in our youth drop in space who are experiencing homelessness with case management, resources, and referral services. This position also provides Youth Access Point services through partnerships with the San Francisco Department of Homelessness & Supportive Housing (HSH) and other stakeholders.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide Youth Access Point services to transitional age youth experiencing homelessness by utilizing partnerships and community partners to screen and assess participants using standardized tools and protocols in the city’s Online Navigation and Entry (ONE) System to access housing programs within San Francisco including the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing.
Work as part of an interdisciplinary team to assess youth program participants' needs and connect youth with a wide range of necessary resources. Activities may include accompanying youth to appointments, advocacy with referring agencies, and supporting participants in the navigation of public benefits.
Maintain strong relationships with appropriate collaborative partners, including but not limited to the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing, other Coordinated-Entry Youth Access Point providers, government agencies, and LGBTQ and/or TAY serving organizations.
Support activities conducted by collaborative partners, including maintaining appropriate relationships with partner program staff and a basic understanding of referral/resource networks for TAY.
Engage in outreach activities to support program promotion and participation.
Ensure data is collected and entered into database system; program materials and supplies are adequate for program needs, and housing navigation space is maintained, including updating navigation supplies list and maintaining case management notes.
Actively participate as a member of the program team, including back up for other program staff as needed.
Work on evenings and weekends may be required.
Other duties as assigned.
- ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Commitment to the mission of the SF LGBT Center and a strong commitment to racial, social, gender and economic justice. Experience and commitment to working in a multicultural environment.
Demonstrated ability to engage with LGBTQ transitional age youth experiencing homelessness through one-on-one and group level interventions.
- Strong cultural competency regarding sexual orientation, gender identity, race and ethnicity, ability, and other social identities.
- Ability to utilize harm reduction and trauma informed care frameworks in service provision especially as related to experiences of homelessness, domestic violence, interpersonal violence, substance use, mental health, sexual health, sex work, and systems impacted youth.
- Ability to work with participants toward an expressed goal using motivational interviewing, crisis counseling, case management, conflict resolution, de-escalation, and/or other interpersonal skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality. As youth services are provided within a collaborative context, position may need to meet guidelines established by collaborative partners to share confidential client information across agencies.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a collaborative environment.
- Computer literacy, including Internet proficiency, Microsoft Office, and networked systems.
- Bilingual proficiency (English and Spanish) required. Excellent verbal communication skills in both languages are essential.
- Livescan and TB Test clearance required.
