Job description

Position: Volunteer Tax Preparer

Position Summary:
Assist individuals and families with preparing and filing federal and state income tax returns through a community tax assistance program. Volunteers help taxpayers understand their tax returns, identify eligible credits and deductions, and ensure returns are prepared accurately and confidentially.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare basic federal and state income tax returns for eligible taxpayers.
  • Interview taxpayers and gather required tax documents and information.
  • Enter taxpayer information accurately into approved tax preparation software.
  • Identify applicable tax credits and deductions.
  • Review completed returns for accuracy and completeness.
  • Explain tax return results and basic tax information to taxpayers.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of taxpayer information.
  • Follow IRS, state, and program policies and procedures.
  • Participate in required training and certification.
  • Provide friendly, respectful, and professional customer service.

Qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge of federal and state income taxes preferred.
