Professionals working with tax software in an accounting firm typically spend their days preparing, reviewing, and filing tax returns for clients using specialized software platforms. They are responsible for ensuring data accuracy, staying updated on tax law changes, and troubleshooting any issues that arise with the software. Collaboration with team members is common, as they often assist colleagues with software questions and help implement workflow improvements to increase efficiency. Additionally, they may provide client support by answering tax-related queries and ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Tax Software Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tax Software Specialist, you need a solid understanding of tax regulations, accounting principles, and experience with tax preparation, usually supported by a degree in accounting or finance. Proficiency in tax software platforms such as Intuit ProConnect, Thomson Reuters, or CCH Axcess, along with certifications like Enrolled Agent (EA) or CPA, is often required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help you resolve client issues and adapt to regulatory changes. These skills are crucial for ensuring accurate tax filings, maximizing compliance, and delivering reliable client support in a dynamic environment.

The firm provides assurance, tax, business consulting, and entrepreneurial accounting services to a diverse client base that includes closely held and entrepreneurial businesses, nonprofits, government-regulated entities, manufacturers, construction firms, service organizations, and individuals. ASO is seeking a seasoned tax professional at the Senior Manager level to join and strengthen its tax leadership team. This is a high-visibility role with a clear and accelerated path to partnership for the right candidate.

The firm is located within approximately one hour of the Cincinnati metro area, offering access to a broader talent pool and metropolitan amenities while maintaining a community-oriented practice environment.
WORK ARRANGEMENT
This role is primarily in-office, with hybrid flexibility based on experience and performance. The firm's leadership team values a collaborative, in-person culture while recognizing that top performers benefit from the flexibility to manage their schedules around client needs and personal commitments.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Review approximately 450-550 tax returns annually; preparation is handled at more junior levels (less than 10% personal preparation work)
• Act as a sounding board for accounting-related questions from staff and managers
• Manage and develop 1-2 Tax Managers, fostering professional growth and ensuring quality standards
• Maintain strong, direct relationships with clients in a highly client-facing role requiring excellent communication and advisory skills
• Sign off on tax returns with full authority, with increasing autonomy as trust is established (or immediately for qualified candidates)
• Collaborate with firm leadership on technical matters, process improvement, and maintaining the firm's reputation for excellence
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Active CPA license (required)
• 10-15+ years of progressive public accounting experience
• Exceptional technical tax acumen with the ability to serve as a confident, go-to resource for the firm's tax practice
• Demonstrated ability to manage teams and develop talent
• Strong client-facing skills with a track record of building trusted advisor relationships
• Accounting knowledge sufficient to serve as a resource for staff questions
• Partnership-heavy tax experience preferred; industry agnostic
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience with CCH tax software environment (or demonstrated ability to learn new platforms quickly)
• Experience in a leadership or practice-area leadership capacity
• Readiness to take on increasing responsibility with a trajectory toward partnership
WHAT ASO OFFERS
• Clear and accelerated path to partnership for high performers
• No requirement to bring a book of business; ample existing client work and organic growth opportunities
• Primary focus on technical execution and client service. This is not a rainmaker role, though client relationship development is valued as the practice continues to grow
• A trust-based, output-driven culture where leadership measures results, not keystrokes. Top performers are given real autonomy, flexibility around personal commitments, and the latitude to manage their own schedules
• Hybrid work schedule with a flexible offseason schedule
• Dress for Your Day policy
• Competitive PTO package plus holidays, with additional time off negotiable outside of busy season
• Health and dental insurance
• Employer 401(k) match
• Performance-based bonus opportunity
• A collaborative, family-friendly environment that genuinely respects work-life balance without sacrificing professional standards
• Competitive compensation with partnership economics discussed during the interview process
COMPENSATION & HOURS
Compensation is commensurate with experience, qualifications, and the value the candidate brings to the practice. The firm offers a competitive base salary, performance-based bonus structure, and a clearly defined equity partnership path. Full details will be discussed during the interview process.
Expected billable hours in the range of 1,400-1,600 annually (2,300-2,400 total hours), consistent with senior leadership expectations.
