Tax Software Analyst information

What does a tax software analyst do?

A Tax Software Analyst is responsible for evaluating, implementing, and supporting tax software solutions used by organizations or individuals to manage their tax compliance and reporting needs. They analyze business requirements, troubleshoot software issues, and provide technical support to users. Their role often involves collaborating with tax professionals, IT teams, and software vendors to ensure the software meets regulatory standards and user needs. Additionally, they may assist with software updates, user training, and process optimization to enhance efficiency during tax season.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tax software analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tax Software Analyst, you need a solid understanding of tax laws, accounting principles, and experience with tax preparation, often supported by a degree in accounting or a related field. Familiarity with tax software platforms (such as TurboTax, Drake, or UltraTax), data analytics tools, and sometimes relevant certifications like Enrolled Agent (EA) are highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help analysts provide accurate support and translate complex tax concepts for clients or development teams. These skills ensure efficient troubleshooting, regulatory compliance, and high customer satisfaction in a technology-driven tax environment.

What are some common challenges faced by tax software analysts when supporting clients during peak tax season?

During peak tax season, Tax Software Analysts often encounter high volumes of support requests, ranging from software troubleshooting to guidance on new tax regulations. Balancing timely responses with accurate, detailed assistance can be challenging, especially when clients are under tight filing deadlines. Analysts must stay updated on tax law changes and software updates to provide the best support, and they frequently collaborate with product developers and tax professionals to resolve complex issues. Effective time management, strong communication skills, and a customer-focused mindset are essential to succeed in this fast-paced period.

Role Summary

Our client, a global Fortune 500 organization, is seeking a Senior Tax Analyst to join its corporate tax team. This role will focus primarily on supporting the preparation of U.S. federal income tax returns and collaborating on tax compliance, reporting, and process improvement initiatives. The position offers a highly flexible hybrid schedule and exposure to a large-scale corporate tax environment.

Candidates with experience from Big 4 firms, large national public accounting firms, or sizable corporate tax departments are strongly preferred. Backgrounds exclusively in small firms or companies are not aligned with this role.

Key Responsibilities
  • Compile data and prepare the company’s consolidated U.S. federal corporate income tax return using tax software applications
  • Prepare additional U.S. federal tax filings for entities outside the consolidated group
  • Support tax technical research and contribute to tax technology and process improvement initiatives
  • Assist in maintaining and supporting tax department systems and databases
  • Implement and support SOX controls related to the tax return preparation process
  • Reconcile federal tax return data to amounts reported in publicly filed financial statements
  • Support IRS audit documentation and compliance requirements
  • Perform additional tax and accounting-related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • One of the following experience paths:
    • 4+ years of experience in tax and/or accounting, or
    • 2+ years of experience at a Big 4 public accounting firm
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. corporate income tax rules and regulations, including consolidated return concepts
  • Experience with tax research tools such as BNA, RIA, CCH, or similar platforms
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook) and document management platforms (e.g., SharePoint, OneDrive)

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Accounting, Taxation, or related field
  • CPA designation (active or in progress)
  • Experience with enterprise and tax technology tools such as SAP, OneStream, Corptax, Alteryx, Business Objects, Power Query, and Power BI

Compensation & Work Model
  • Salary range of $85,000 to $115,000, depending on experience
  • Highly flexible hybrid schedule with approximately one in-office day per week
  • Opportunity to work within a large, sophisticated corporate tax environment
