The Manager, Sales & Use Tax Audit is responsible for leading and managing the Company's sales and use tax audit and controversy function. This role manages and develops a team responsible for state and local sales and use tax audits, assessments, appeals and related controversy matters. The positions partners with business stakeholders to resolve audit issues, mitigate tax risk, and implement sustainable process improvements. The Manager supports enterprise initiatives and drives strategies that enhance audit readiness, strengthen internal controls, and executes effective audit defense strategies.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
  • Lead, coach, and develop the team responsible for managing state and local sales and use tax audits.
  • Oversee audit inquiries, assessments, appeals, refund claims and controversy matters with taxing authorities. Work with internal and external parties to resolve audit and controversy issues.
  • Communicate audit findings, exposures, and recommend corrective actions to business stakeholders and leadership.
  • Develop and monitor key performance indicators related to audit activity, tax savings, assessments, and resolution timelines.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and assess impacts on audits, controversy matters, and compliance processes.
  • Support enterprise initiatives, acquisitions, new business initiatives, and operational changes by providing sales and use tax audit and controversy expertise.
  • Drive audit readiness through strong documentation, process improvements, and risk mitigation initiatives.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
EDUCATION: Bachelors/4 Yr Degree
YEARS OF RELEVANT WORK EXPERIENCE: 7+ years
YEARS OF MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE: 2+ years
CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES: CMI, CPA, JD, or MST preferred but not required
SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
  • 7+ years of progressive sales and use tax experience with a strong emphasis on audit and controversy management.
  • Experience managing complex, multi-state sales and use tax audits from inception through resolution.
  • Retail, convenience store, or multi-location business experience preferred
  • Knowledge of state and local sales and use tax laws, regulations, and audit practices.
  • Experience managing third-party advisors and external audit resources
  • Organizational and project management capabilities with the ability to manage multiple audits simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax matters to stakeholders.

Strong research, analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
