Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Staff Accountant, Tax, supports multi-state tax compliance and regulatory filings for the organization, with a primary focus on White River Marine Group operations. This role is responsible for preparing and filing sales and use tax returns, maintaining business registrations, and supporting audits and state compliance requirements. The position partners with internal departments and external agencies to ensure timely, accurate, and compliant filings across multiple jurisdictions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Prepares and files sales and use tax returns across multiple states and jurisdictions in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Files personal property tax assessments and maintains supporting documentation for fixed assets and taxable property.
  • Assists with state and local sales tax audits, including gathering documentation and responding to auditor requests.
  • Coordinates fleet vehicle registration renewals and ensures compliance with state requirements.
  • Prepares and files annual reports with various states to maintain business entity compliance.
  • Manages the renewal of business licenses for multiple locations and ensures ongoing regulatory compliance.
  • Maintains tax calendars, schedules, and workpapers to support filings and audits.
  • Partners with internal departments to gather required tax data and ensure compliance with applicable regulations.

ALL OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED
EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Minimum Degree Required: Bachelor's Degree
  • Preferred Degree: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or related field (if applicable)
  • Years of experience: 3 - 5 years of accounting or tax compliance experience preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY:
  • Working knowledge of multi-state tax compliance, including sales and use tax.
  • Understanding of general accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and prioritize workload effectively.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
  • Experience with tax compliance software and ERP systems preferred.
  • Ability to research and interpret state and local tax regulations.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Minimal travel required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Regularly sits and works on a computer.
Occasionally stands and walks.
Seldom/never lifts up to 50 lbs.
INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT:
Performs duties within scope of general company policies, procedures, and objectives. Analyzes problems and performs needs assessments. Uses judgment in adapting broad guidelines to achieve desired result. Regular exercise of independent judgment within accepted practices. Makes recommendations that affect policies, procedures, and practices.
