What is a tax preparer assistant?

Tax Preparer Assistants are professionals who support tax preparers or accountants by gathering client information, organizing financial documents, and entering data into tax software. They help ensure all necessary paperwork is complete and accurate, and may perform basic administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments or answering client questions. While they are not usually responsible for preparing or filing tax returns themselves, their work is essential in streamlining the tax preparation process. Tax Preparer Assistants must have strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and familiarity with tax documents and procedures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tax preparer assistant?

To thrive as a Tax Preparer Assistant, you need a solid understanding of tax regulations, attention to detail, and basic accounting skills, typically supported by a high school diploma or associate degree in accounting or a related field. Familiarity with tax preparation software such as TurboTax or Drake Tax, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Excel, is important for managing and organizing client data. Strong communication, organizational skills, and discretion with sensitive information make an assistant stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are essential for ensuring accurate and efficient tax preparation, maintaining client trust, and supporting the work of certified tax professionals.

What are some common challenges tax preparer assistants face during the busy tax season?

During the busy tax season, Tax Preparer Assistants often juggle a high volume of documents and client requests, which can lead to tight deadlines and increased stress. Staying organized and detail-oriented is crucial, as even minor errors in data entry or documentation can cause delays or complications. Additionally, assistants frequently coordinate with both clients and senior tax preparers, requiring strong communication and multitasking skills to ensure all information is accurate and complete. Adapting to different tax software programs and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of tax regulations are also key aspects of the role.

Job description

Join a Global Technology LeaderDurst is a global leader in advanced digital printing and production technologies, helping customers transform manufacturing through innovative equipment, software, automation, and digital workflow solutions. Across North America, we support customers through equipment sales, service, software, consumables, and technical expertise.
As our business continues to grow throughout the United States and Canada, we are seeking an experienced Tax Supervisor to become our international, internal tax expert and trusted advisor to the business.
This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced CPA looking to transition into an industry leadership role. You'll partner directly with senior leadership, collaborate with outside tax advisors, and play an integral role in supporting the Company's continued growth.
Why This Role? This is a highly hands-on role. While the position serves as the Company's primary tax resource and owner of the North American tax function, the successful candidate will personally prepare workpapers, coordinate filings, manage registrations, respond to tax notices, perform tax research, and support compliance activities. This position does not have direct reports and is ideal for a tax professional who enjoys both technical tax work and business partnership.
Highlights
  • - Own the Company's tax function across North America
  • - Partner directly with executive leadership
  • - Work across U.S. and Canadian entities
  • - Lead tax compliance and planning initiatives
  • - Influence business growth, acquisitions, and organizational changes
  • - Enjoy challenging work with the stability and work-life balance of an in-house role
Join a Global Technology Leader
Income Tax
  • - Coordinate federal, state, local, and Canadian income tax compliance.
  • - Prepare annual tax workpapers and supporting documentation.
  • - Serve as the primary liaison with external tax advisors.
  • - Review tax returns for accuracy and completeness.
  • - Research complex tax issues and support tax planning initiatives.
  • - Assist with quarterly and annual tax provision activities.
State and Local Tax (SALT)
  • - Monitor nexus and filing requirements as the business expands.
  • - Coordinate registrations in new states and provinces.
  • - Monitor legislative changes affecting tax compliance.
  • - Assist with audits, notices, and regulatory filings.
Sales and Use Tax
  • - Prepare and review sales and use tax filings.
  • - Monitor economic nexus requirements.
  • - Support exemption certificate administration.
  • - Partner with Accounting and Operations to improve compliance processes.
Process Improvement & Strategic Projects
  • - Improve tax processes, documentation, and internal controls.
  • - Maintain tax calendars and filing schedules.
  • - Support acquisitions, new entity formation, and business restructuring.
  • - Participate in strategic initiatives with tax implications.
QualificationsRequired:
  • - Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field
  • - CPA required
  • - 6-10+ years of progressive tax experience
  • - Current or recent Tax Supervisor experience in public accounting
  • - Strong knowledge of federal and multi-state corporate taxation
  • - Experience with C Corporations and pass-through entities
  • - Strong analytical, research, and communication skills
  • - Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
Preferred:
  • - Canadian corporate tax experience
  • - Sales and use tax experience
  • - Manufacturing or distribution industry experience
  • - Experience supporting multiple legal entities
  • - Familiarity with tax research and compliance software

Why Durst? At Durst, you'll have the opportunity to make a visible impact on a growing North American business while working alongside an experienced leadership team. Rather than specializing in one area of tax, you'll gain broad responsibility across compliance, planning, process improvement, and strategic initiatives.
If you're looking for the next step in your career-one that combines technical challenge, business partnership, and long-term growth-we'd love to hear from you.
