Tax Manager 

Department: Tax / Finance 

Reports To: Tax Director 

POSITION SUMMARY 

The Tax Manager is responsible for overseeing indirect tax compliance across multiple states and jurisdictions, leading a team of tax professionals, and partnering with the Tax Director on strategic initiatives. This role combines hands-on technical expertise with supervisory accountability to ensure accurate, timely, and efficient tax operations. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES 

This position carries direct supervisory responsibility for tax staff and is accountable for team performance, development, and day-to-day management. 

  • Directly supervise, mentor, and develop tax team members, including Tax Analysts and Tax Associates 
  • Conduct regular one-on-ones, set performance goals, and deliver formal performance reviews 
  • Review and approve work product prepared by direct reports, including tax returns, reconciliations, and research memos, prior to submission or escalation 
  • Manage workload distribution across the team to ensure deadlines are met and resources are appropriately utilized 
  • Identify training needs and support the professional development of team members 
  • Participate in hiring, onboarding, and performance management processes as needed 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

In addition to supervisory duties, the Tax Manager maintains active involvement in the following functional areas: 

Compliance & Filing 

  • Prepare, review, and file sales, use, and excise tax returns across multiple states and jurisdictions 
  • Ensure all filings are accurate, complete, and submitted within required deadlines 
  • Oversee the maintenance and regular updating of the tax calendar, tax database, and compliance tracking systems 

Research & Regulatory Interpretation 

  • Conduct tax research and interpret federal, state, and local regulations to ensure ongoing compliance 
  • Identify tax savings opportunities and planning strategies; present findings and recommendations to the Tax Director 
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments that may impact the organization's tax positions 

Data Analysis & Reporting 

  • Extract, validate, and analyze financial data from various systems (ERP, billing, accounting) to support accurate tax calculations and reporting 
  • Develop and maintain reports and dashboards that provide visibility into tax compliance status and exposures 

Process Improvement 

  • Identify, design, and implement process improvements to increase efficiency, reduce risk, and improve accuracy across the tax function 
  • Leverage technology and automation tools to streamline compliance workflows 

Special Projects & Leadership Support 

  • Lead or assist with special tax projects and strategic initiatives as assigned by the Tax Director 
  • Serve as a subject matter resource for cross-functional teams on indirect tax matters 
  • Support audit responses, notices, and correspondence from taxing authorities 

QUALIFICATIONS 

Education & Experience 

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; advanced degree or CPA preferred 
  • 3+ years of progressive experience in tax compliance, with a focus on indirect/sales and use tax 
  • Prior supervisory or team lead experience strongly preferred 

Skills & Competencies 

  • Strong knowledge of multi-state sales, use, and excise tax law and regulations 
  • Proficiency with tax software (e.g., Vertex, Avalara, or similar) and ERP systems 
  • Advanced Excel skills; experience with data extraction and reporting tools 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax concepts to non-tax stakeholders 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment 
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 3+ years of hands-on sales, use, and excise tax experience (required)

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and tax research tools
  • Experience with tax compliance, reporting, and financial data analysis

  • Prior experience in retail, fuel, travel centers, or multi-location environments is a strong plus
