What is a tax controller?

Tax Controllers are finance professionals responsible for overseeing a company's tax strategy, compliance, and reporting. They ensure that the organization adheres to all local, state, and federal tax laws and regulations. Their duties include preparing tax returns, managing audits, minimizing tax liabilities, and advising management on tax-related issues. They typically collaborate with other accounting and finance staff to streamline processes and support business decisions.

How does a tax controller typically collaborate with other departments within a company?

A Tax Controller works closely with departments such as finance, legal, and operations to ensure tax compliance and optimize tax strategies. They often coordinate with the accounting team to gather financial data, collaborate with legal to interpret new regulations, and partner with business units to assess the tax impact of major initiatives. Effective communication skills and cross-functional teamwork are essential, as the Tax Controller must translate complex tax concepts for non-tax professionals and ensure alignment across the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tax controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tax Controller, you need deep expertise in tax accounting, regulatory compliance, and financial reporting, typically backed by a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and often a CPA certification. Familiarity with tax preparation software, ERP systems, and advanced Excel skills are essential for managing complex tax processes. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication enable Tax Controllers to interpret regulations and lead teams. These skills ensure accurate tax filings, minimize financial risk, and maintain organizational compliance with constantly evolving tax laws.

Job description

Controller – Client Accounting & Advisory

Tampa, FL | Full-Time

At Solved, we provide fractional accounting and financial leadership to growing businesses. We’re looking for an experienced accounting professional who can take ownership of the financial function for a portfolio of clients while leading a team and staying close to the day-to-day accounting.

This is a hands-on Controller role. You’ll oversee approximately 5–7 clients, manage and develop accounting team members, and work directly with business owners, leadership teams, and other client stakeholders.

We’re looking for someone who knows how to get the accounting right—but doesn’t stop there. You should be able to review the financials, understand what’s driving the numbers, identify issues and opportunities, and communicate those insights clearly to clients.

This could be a great next step for an Accounting Manager, Assistant Controller, CAS Manager, or Controller who wants broader ownership, exposure to multiple businesses, and the opportunity to continue developing their financial leadership and advisory skills.

What You'll Do

Own the Accounting

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting and financial operations for a portfolio of approximately 5–7 clients
  • Lead the month-end close process and ensure financial statements are accurate and delivered on time
  • Review reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, AP, AR, payroll, and other accounting activity
  • Maintain accurate balance sheets and resolve discrepancies or accounting issues
  • Ensure accounting practices and financial reporting are consistent with GAAP
  • Develop and maintain strong accounting processes, procedures, documentation, and internal controls
  • Coordinate with tax professionals, auditors, payroll providers, and other external partners
  • Stay close to the work and be willing to step in when the team needs additional support

Reporting & Financial Analysis

  • Prepare and review monthly financial reporting packages
  • Analyze financial performance and identify meaningful trends, risks, and opportunities
  • Perform budget-to-actual and other variance analyses
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow planning
  • Develop and monitor financial and operational KPIs
  • Help clients understand what is driving their financial performance
  • Translate financial information into clear, actionable insights for business owners and leadership teams

Lead Clients

  • Serve as a primary accounting and financial point of contact for assigned clients
  • Develop a strong understanding of each client's business, operations, goals, and financial drivers
  • Build trusted relationships with business owners and client leadership teams
  • Communicate financial results clearly to both financial and non-financial stakeholders
  • Work cross-functionally with client teams to solve accounting and operational challenges
  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve processes, reporting, controls, and financial visibility
  • Manage multiple client relationships, deadlines, and priorities simultaneously

Lead & Develop a Team

  • Manage, coach, and develop accounting team members
  • Review work for accuracy, completeness, and quality
  • Delegate effectively while maintaining ownership of client deliverables
  • Set clear expectations and hold team members accountable for deadlines and quality
  • Help improve team processes and identify opportunities to work more efficiently

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Experience in a Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, CAS Manager, or similar accounting leadership role
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and accounting principles
  • Demonstrated experience with month-end close and financial statement preparation and review
  • Strong understanding of the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement
  • Experience with general ledger accounting, reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, AP, AR, payroll, and other core accounting functions
  • Experience managing or reviewing the work of accounting team members
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, cash flow, variance analysis, and financial reporting
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong Excel skills and comfort working across accounting and financial technology platforms
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and client relationships
  • Willingness to remain hands-on with the accounting when needed

Preferred

  • Public accounting experience
  • Tax experience or a strong working knowledge of business tax
  • CPA or CPA-track experience
  • Experience in Client Accounting Services (CAS), outsourced accounting, consulting, or another multi-client environment
  • Experience working with privately held and founder-led businesses
  • Experience managing multiple entities, clients, or engagements
  • Experience working directly with business owners and executive leadership
  • Experience improving accounting processes, systems, reporting, or internal controls
  • Experience with financial dashboards, KPIs, and management reporting

Who Will Thrive in This Role

You may be a great fit if you:

  • Have strong accounting fundamentals and genuinely enjoy the work
  • Want ownership beyond completing assigned accounting tasks
  • Are comfortable reviewing work and rolling up your sleeves when necessary
  • Naturally investigate when something in the financials doesn't make sense
  • Enjoy working with clients and learning how different businesses operate
  • Can move between multiple clients and priorities without losing attention to detail
  • Enjoy developing people and building stronger accounting teams
  • Want to grow your financial analysis and advisory capabilities without moving away from accounting
  • Take ownership of problems and follow them through to resolution

Growth Opportunity

This role provides the opportunity to build on a strong accounting foundation while gaining broader exposure to different businesses, industries, and leadership teams.

As you grow in the role, you'll have opportunities to deepen your experience in financial analysis, forecasting, cash flow management, KPI development, executive communication, and financial advisory.

For someone who ultimately wants to progress beyond the Controller level, you'll gain valuable exposure to the skills and business judgment required for higher-level financial leadership—while continuing to build on the strong accounting foundation that makes great financial leadership possible.
