What is a tax associate?

Tax Associates are professionals who assist individuals or organizations with preparing and filing tax returns, ensuring compliance with tax laws, and providing tax planning advice. They typically work under the supervision of senior accountants or tax managers and help with gathering financial information, analyzing tax regulations, and identifying potential deductions or credits. Tax Associates may work in accounting firms, corporate finance departments, or government agencies, and they often interact directly with clients to address tax-related questions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tax associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tax Associate, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, tax laws, and regulations, typically supported by a degree in accounting or finance. Familiarity with tax preparation software (such as CCH Axcess or ProSystem fx), Excel, and possibly CPA eligibility or certification is often required. Attention to detail, strong analytical thinking, and effective communication are essential soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure accuracy, compliance, and strong client relationships in a highly regulated and deadline-driven environment.

What are some common challenges faced by tax associates during tax season, and how can they manage workload effectively?

Tax Associates often experience increased workloads and tight deadlines during tax season, which can be challenging to manage. Balancing multiple clients, staying updated on frequent tax law changes, and ensuring accuracy under pressure are common hurdles. Effective time management, clear communication with team members, and utilizing tax preparation software can help alleviate stress and improve efficiency. Many firms also foster a collaborative environment where associates can seek guidance from senior staff, making it easier to handle complex client situations.

Job description

Tax Manager | Providence, RI (Hybrid)

Looking for the firm where your next move is also your long-term move?

We have partnered with an established, award-winning public accounting firm in Providence, RI to find their next Tax Manager. This is a firm that has been recognized as one of the Best Places to Work in Rhode Island and a Best Firm to Work For nationally, and the culture is the real reason people stay. They are growing their Tax Department and want a leader who is ready to advise clients, develop a team, and step onto a clear path to Partner.

Why this one is worth a look

  • A genuine path to Partner for someone who wants it. This is a seat to build a future in, not a holding pattern.
  • A workplace culture that has won awards for being a great place to work, not one that just says it is.
  • Flexible, hybrid schedule after onboarding, competitive salary, strong health, dental, and vision options, a retirement plan with company match, generous PTO, and real support for professional development and certifications.

What you will do

  • Lead the preparation and review of federal, state, and local tax returns across individuals, businesses, and entities, including S and C corporations, partnerships, LLCs, and trusts.
  • Research complex tax issues and turn the law into smart, practical strategies for a diverse client base.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor and primary point of contact, deepening existing relationships and building new ones.
  • Mentor and develop Staff, Seniors, and Supervisors, and collaborate with firm leadership on reports, presentations, and planning.
  • Help shape the firm from the inside through process improvement and training initiatives.

What you bring

  • 6+ years of federal and state income tax preparation and review in public accounting, including S and C corporations, partnerships, multi-state returns, high-net-worth individuals, and trusts.
  • Experience with tax planning for closely held businesses and their owners.
  • A track record of training, mentoring, and supervising staff while managing multiple engagements and client relationships across a range of industries.
  • A bachelor's degree in accounting and an active CPA license. An MST is a plus.
  • The drive to take on more and grow into a Partner.

The details

  • Location: Providence, RI, hybrid after an initial onboarding and training period.
