What does a tax accountant intern do?

A Tax Accountant Intern assists professional accountants and tax preparers with preparing and filing tax returns for individuals or businesses. Their responsibilities often include gathering and organizing financial documents, performing basic data entry, researching current tax laws, and helping ensure compliance with regulations. Interns gain valuable hands-on experience in tax preparation, learn about tax software, and develop an understanding of accounting principles. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates looking to pursue a career in accounting or tax.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tax accountant intern?

To thrive as a Tax Accountant Intern, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, attention to detail, and coursework or a degree in accounting or finance. Familiarity with tax preparation software (like CCH Axcess or ProSystem fx), Microsoft Excel, and sometimes knowledge of IRS regulations are typically expected. Strong analytical thinking, time management, and clear communication skills help you excel in team environments and meet tight deadlines. These skills ensure accurate tax filings, compliance with regulations, and effective support for senior accountants during busy tax seasons.

What are some common challenges faced by tax accountant interns during their internship?

Tax Accountant Interns often encounter challenges such as managing tight deadlines during tax season, quickly learning complex tax software, and interpreting frequently changing tax laws and regulations. Interns are also expected to handle a variety of tasks, from preparing tax returns to supporting audits, which requires strong organizational and multitasking skills. Collaborating with more experienced accountants and communicating with clients can be demanding, but these experiences provide valuable learning opportunities and help interns build confidence in a professional setting.

What is the difference between Tax Accountant Intern vs Tax Associate?

At Current, everything starts with people. We believe that when you invest in talent through opportunity, development, and support, you unlock growth for individuals, firms, and clients alike. That's why we've built a platform designed to give our people access to more: more learning, more collaboration, and more ways to grow their careers than any single firm could offer on its own.
Founded in 2023, Currenthas rapidly become one of the fastest-growing accounting platforms in the country, partnering with more than 40 leading accounting firms across the United States. Today, our community includes over 2,000 professionals, 30+ offices nationwide, and a growing global workforce that supports clients around the world. Our leadership team has a proven track record of building and scaling successful businesses, with prior ventures generating more than $3 billion in combined enterprise value.
We're building something bigger than a traditional accounting firm: a platform where talented people can grow faster, learn more, and do more meaningful work. Whether you join Current, one of our partner firms, or our global team, you'll be part of a community shaping the future of the profession.
Our member firm is hiring for their office based in Charlotte, NC!
Join a growing Charlotte-based CPA firm as a Senior Tax Accountant and become part of a collaborative, client-focused team. This opportunity is ideal for a service-oriented tax professional who enjoys building relationships with privately held small- and mid-sized businesses while delivering exceptional tax and advisory services. You'll gain meaningful client exposure, strengthen your technical expertise through hands-on experience and ongoing professional development, and enjoy clear opportunities for career growth, leadership, and specialization as the firm continues to expand.
Responsibilities
  • Interact directly with clients to provide innovative tax planning, consulting, and compliance expertise.
  • Prepare S-Corporations, Partnerships, C-Corporations, and ultra-high net worth individuals' U.S. federal and multi-state income tax returns.
  • Preparation of property tax returns, sales tax returns, and 1099 forms.
  • Assist with tax calculations and reconciliations for book to tax differences, special projects in support of corporate goals, implement process improvements and other objectives as directed by the Executive Team.
  • Perform initial technical reviews of staff and intern work
  • Prepare reconciliations and analyses for accounts as assigned and support external audits
  • Assist in the preparation of the Company's US (federal) quarterly and annual income tax provision calculations and related financial statement disclosures, including computation of book to tax differences, M-1/M-2/M-3, and supporting tasks related to ASC 740
  • Contribute to process and technology improvements aimed at streamlining compliance and reporting
  • Research tax issues, review legislative developments, and assist in the analysis

Requirements
  • Licensed or Eligible to sit for the CPA exam
  • Minimum of 3 tax seasons working with privately held companies
  • Motivated to be an advisor to a variety of business clients with varying skill levels

Preferred
  • Licensed CPA
  • Experience with business clients $5-$50+ million in revenue
  • Industry knowledge for construction/contractors, real estate, and/or professional services
  • Experience with client accounting services, including bank reconciliations, fixed assets, prepaids and accruals, etc.
  • Prior experience in training and technical review of staff work
  • Seeking opportunities to guide and foster team members towards their technical and career goals

We are excited to invite talented individuals to join our dynamic team! This position offers a competitive salary range of $70,000.00-$100,000.00 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
We are committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive workplace where every team member can thrive. Apply today to be part of a company that values its people and their contributions!
