About the Organization:


The Barrie Area Native Advisory Circle (BANAC) is an Indigenous governed, Indigenous led regional social planning and development organization. The BANAC service region now covers Simcoe County, Muskoka, and the northern York region. BANAC works in cooperation with Indigenous communities and non-Indigenous organizations to address community-identified priorities through coordinated planning, implementation and evaluation. BANAC has a mandate to support the continued promotion of Indigenous lifelong learning and community wellness through self-determination and community participation.

BANAC offers many innovative programs and services including Aging Well Senior Supports, Bebminot Family Wellness, the Biinoojinsauk Child Care Centre, Maapii Enjii Zaagi Gaazwad and the Mamaway Wiidokdaadwin Indigenous Interprofessional Primary Care Team. Mamaway Wiidokdaadwin offers a wholistic approach to wellness that includes traditional healing practices in primary care, community clinics, addiction and recovery services, counselling programs, midwifery, land-based healing programs, and community health promotion.


About the Role:


This position operates within an Indigenous-led and Indigenous-governed organization that is accountable to the communities it serves. Work is grounded in the principle of Indigenous Health in Indigenous Hands, ensuring that all programs and services are developed, delivered, and evaluated under Indigenous governance structures and community direction. In alignment with Indigenous and provincial standards, the organization upholds excellence in care, accountability, and compliance while centering on Indigenous knowledge systems, cultural safety, and self-determination in health and social service deliverables.

All employees are required to participate in organizational Indigenous Cultural Safety training and to engage in ongoing reflexive practices as part of their professional development. This includes a commitment to examining personal and systemic biases, deepening understanding of Indigenous histories and experiences, and ensuring that service delivery aligns with the values of respect, reciprocity, and wholism that guide the organizations work.

This position is being posted in response to an existing vacancy at the Barrie Area Native Advisory Circle.


Working as part of the Indigenous interprofessional primary health care team, the Nurse Practitioner will provide trauma-informed, culturally safe primary health care to full scope with a strong emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention for Indigenous patients. The Nurse Practitioner will assess, diagnose, treat and monitor a wide range of health problems while engaging patients as full partners in their care plan. Working under a guiding value of wholism, the Nurse Practitioner will work collaboratively with an interprofessional team including Traditional Healing, Social Work and Counselling, Nursing, Community Health Professionals, and Mental Health and Addictions Professionals to support physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being for clients. The Nurse Practitioner brings advanced skills in primary care services to the table to support Indigenous communities. Working in a clinic space and in the community, the Nurse Practitioner will meet patients where-they-are-at as part of our trauma-informed care delivery model. This role is assigned to a specific base location with some regional work as required.

What You Bring:


  • Member in good standing and without restrictions, College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Nurse in Extended Class [RN(EC)] required.
  • Member of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario and/or the Nurse Practitioners Association of Ontario.
  • Bachelors Degree in Nursing from a recognized University and Certificate as a Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner.
  • Masters Degree in Nursing, Nurse Practitioner Program preferred.
  • Experience working as an NP in a primary health care or community setting an asset.
  • Experience working within an EMR and an electronic office work environment.
  • Experience working with Indigenous patients and communities.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture and protocols and willingness to work in community settings.
  • Demonstrate commitment to learning and integrating land-based healing and cultural approaches to wellness into patient care through connection to services and referrals to traditional healers and cultural health professionals.
  • Understanding and knowledge of a trauma-informed approach to health care.
  • Familiarity with the use of OTN assisting patients with referrals to specialists, traditional healers and allied health professionals.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and multi-task without supervision.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with regulated health professionals and maintain a positive team environment.
  • Ability to travel to multiple sites, and a willingness to outreach and engage with Indigenous communities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of various computer applications and software related to healthcare programs.
  • Ability to work in a manner that exemplifies the core values of compassion, respect, accountability, excellence and safety.
  • Ability to provide trauma-informed care, while empowering patient driven care.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:


  • Work is typically performed in BANAC clinics, offices and / or in community settings.
  • Regular travel to meetings and communities is required; access to a personal vehicle is required.
  • Reliable Vehicle Regional Travel Required.
  • Regular overtime work may be required from time to time.
  • Low to moderate exposure to noise in the work environment.
  • Regular exposure to a moderate level of tension and anxiety due to deadlines, competing political pressures, and the competing needs and demands for limited resources.
  • BANAC work site locations are periodically exposed to smoke due to the burning of sacred medicines: tobacco, sweet grass, sage and / or cedar.
