Tapping information

What is tapping?

A Tapping job typically involves operating machinery to drill or cut threads into metal, plastic, or other materials. Workers in this role may use manual or automated tapping machines to ensure precise threading for fasteners, bolts, or assembly components. They must follow technical specifications, inspect finished products for quality, and maintain equipment for optimal performance. Attention to detail and knowledge of machining processes are essential for efficiency and accuracy.

What does a tapping operator do?

As a Tapping Operator, your daily responsibilities usually include setting up and operating tapping machines, monitoring the production process, adjusting machine settings, inspecting finished parts for quality, and performing basic equipment maintenance. You will often work closely with other machine operators, quality assurance personnel, and supervisors to ensure smooth workflow and meet production targets. Attention to detail and the ability to troubleshoot minor equipment issues are key parts of the role. This hands-on work environment requires both technical know-how and the ability to work collaboratively within a team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed for tapping?

To excel as a Tapping Operator, you typically need strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and experience with metalworking or industrial machinery. Familiarity with tapping machines, hand tools, blueprint reading, and often a vocational or technical certification are advantageous. Good problem-solving skills, teamwork, and a focus on workplace safety help individuals stand out. These capabilities are vital for maintaining high quality, efficient production, and a safe working environment.

Job description

Our Mission

Our mission is "We bring ideas to life through innovative manufacturing solutions." Our purpose is "CTG exists to manufacture a better life."

Build the Tooling

As a Vac, Trim, & Fixture Builder, youโ€™ll turn CAD intent into rock-solid vacuum and trim tooling that keeps manufacturing moving fast and accurate. Youโ€™ll review designs at kick-off, then assemble and fit fixtures, gauges, and automation tooling to printโ€”installing pins, clamps, slides, pneumatics, and vacuum components with precision. Expect hands-on drilling, tapping, reaming, grinding, and hand-finishing, plus prove-out/validation, tryouts, and buy-offs. Youโ€™ll document changes, flag issues early, and support repairs and engineering updates.
Required:
- HS diploma/GED; technical certificate/apprenticeship preferred
- 3+ years in fixture/machine building, tool & die, or automation assembly (automotive preferred)
- Blueprint/CAD interpretation; precision measurement; pneumatic/vacuum troubleshooting
- Able to run hi-lo and overhead crane; strong teamwork and communication
If youโ€™re ready to build tooling that performs under pressure, apply today.

Your Daily Momentum

Your morning starts early on the shop floorโ€”checking the dayโ€™s priorities, verifying youโ€™ve got the right components, and setting up your work area for a clean build. Youโ€™ll move between bench work and surface plates, making careful checks with indicators and height gauges, then pivot quickly when a fit-up needs a smart adjustment. Midday often brings a fast-paced prove-out where you watch a tool perform, capture tweaks, and coordinate next steps with engineering and the foreman. As the day closes, youโ€™ll lock in documentation, prep for the next build stage, and keep momentum ready for overtime pushes when schedules demand it.
